The Freedom House is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Media Specialist based in Monrovia, Liberia.
The Senior Media Specialist will assist in development and managing all programmatic aspects for a potential program in Liberia that aims to increase citizens’ access to independent and reliable information, improve the normative-legal-regulatory environment for media, and strengthen the Government of Liberia’s ability to respond to FOI requests.
Freedom House promotes the spread of freedom and democracy around the world through research, advocacy, and programs that support frontline activists.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Senior Media Specialist will perform the following functions-
- Implement a large media development program including the development of capacity building trainings for government institutions, media stakeholders, and civil society.
- Provide group on-site support and consultations to Liberian media outlets, media professionals, and associations
- Conduct rapid needs assessments, financial management, communications, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting
- Ensure effective implementation of local partner activities as well as advise on local partner progress
- Build and maintain relationships with relevant local organizations and key government stakeholders
- Represent the program with donors and other organizations as requested
- Support Freedom House’s ongoing advocacy of democratic governance and human rights issues through occasional contribution to Freedom House publications, articles and other releases
- Other related duties as assigned.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- A university degree; either an advanced degree with 10 years of work experience or a Bachelor’s degree with 15 years of work experience.
- Degrees in journalism, mass media, or in a related social science discipline are highly preferred
- Minimum five (5) years of experience working in a developing country, preferably in Sub Saharan Africa
- Minimum of five or more (5 plus) years’ demonstrated experience in working effectively with media organizations, and capabilities in media development and technical capacity building in freedom of information and expression advocacy
- Longstanding technical experience in dealing with multiple stakeholders including the media, CSOs, and adjudication institutions in a developing country.
- The candidate will ideally have experience in media in Liberia or Sub Saharan Africa
- Proven training and mentoring abilities, preferably including training of local partners and staff
- Proven ability to develop and communicate a common vision among diverse partners and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to effectively write proposals, reports, procedures, and maintain complete documentation
- Knowledge of program management and USG funding sources
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and meet all goals and deadlines
- Ability to interact effectively with local and international partners, staff, and government officials
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Mastery of MS Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint
