Finnish National Doctoral Programme in Development Studies (Devestu) is seeking applications from the university graduates aspiring to complete a PhD degree in Development Studies. Funding is available for three positions for a maximum of 4 years each during the period 2012–2015. Shorter funding periods are also possible.
About Development Studies
Development Studies is a multidisciplinary, primarily social science field of research. Central to Development Studies is the examination of development interventions, i.e. socio-economic and political measures that are taken to promote and guide societal development in so-called developing countries. The main task of Development Studies is to better understand and explain the premises, forms, practices, consequences and impacts of such interventions. The Doctoral Programme will develop and teach theoretical and methodological approaches needed in studying development interventions. Students will be encouraged to base their theses on empirical fieldwork in developing countries.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Postgraduate students will be selected on the strength of their academic achievements and research potential. They must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited research university. The primary criterion for selection is the innovativeness and solidness of the thesis project, as evidenced by the Research Plan (or updated Work Plan) submitted by the applicant (see below). Further criteria include the grade of the Master’s thesis, publication record, experience of work or study in development issues or developing countries, as well as linguistic and cultural capabilities. Preference is given to students who are in early stages of their work.
The working language of the Programme is English. Devestu will organize seminars, courses and workshops and provide personal supervision for each postgraduate student. The school has an extensive network of collaborating institutions in Europe and developing countries. The following institutions are currently members of the Devestu consortium:
Aalto University; University of Helsinki; University of Jyväskylä; University of Tampere; University of Turku.
Each successful applicant will be attached to one of these institutions.
Salary and Benefits
The salary will be based on Demands Level 1–4 of the Teaching and Research Personnel scale in the Finnish University salary system. In addition, appointees are entitled to a salary increment based on personal work performance.
The applications are required in 6 copies. Only properly compiled, copied and stapled applications are taken into consideration.
Last date for submission of application is September 8, 2011
