The African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHeR) with the purpose of increasing the attention and visibility on MSM/LGBTI and HIV related issues is organizing a set of activities to be held prior and during the 16th edition of International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), to be held in Addis Ababa in December 4- 8. These activities include AMSHeR’s Second Sexual Health and Rights Institute (November 30, 2011), as well as its First MSM pre-conference on (December 3, 2011).
This year’s pre-conference events are themed on “Claim, Scale Up, Sustain”. Given the importance and uniqueness of this space, AMSHeR aims to increase knowledge on the sexual health and rights of same-sex practicing people, and develop capacity and competency for HIV and Health response in MSM and LGBTI communities on the continent.
Call for Scholarship Applications
In this context, with support from a number of partners, AMSHeR is offering 35 scholarships to facilitate the attendance of up to 20 participants to the training and the pre-conference, and 10 participants to both events in addition to the conference itself. The scholarships will cover travel, accommodation and subsistence in addition to conference fees.

AMSHeR is a coalition of 15 MSM/LGBT led organizations and other organizations from 13 sub-Saharan African countries working to protect the human rights of LGBTI people and addressing the vulnerability of gay and bisexual men, Male-to-female transgender women and other MSM, to HIV.
AMSHeR provides a platform for exchange and learning among grassroots MSM organizations, HIV services and advocacy organizations, human rights organizations and other agencies working with and/or for MSM communities. It works to strengthen and develop community structures to address issues such as societal discrimination and stigma, and advocate for positive and inclusive legal frameworks and policies as well as effective interventions.
