BACKGROUND OF NODED
NODED was established in response to the identified felt need to the development of the marginalized indigent marginalized disadvantaged, targeting the Orphaned & Vulnerable Children (OVCs) in homes/institutions, in streets and those from marginalized poor families who are mostly school drop outs and young single mothers. These groups of the disadvantaged are being affected by the current set up in the training systems where there are some restrictions keeping them out of the formal vocational skills training. NODED’s research has shown that these disadvantaged OVCs can be made self-reliant if they are trained in some vocational skills which would enable them to be self reliant or be formally employed in the organizations that are in related business. If these OVCs are trained, there will be an improved quality of life through sustainable economic strengthening at grassroots level. The current economic situation in the country has also left these OVCs more vulnerable leading to many children now begging in the streets or be engaged in very menial jobs where they are abused physically and emotionally.
NODED is running 3 Vocational Training Centres in Zimbabwe namely Nyangombe Training Centre in Nyanga, Tongogara Training Centre in Chipinge and Chambuta Training Centre in Chiredzi. The vocational skills training programmes /courses include Dress/Garment making, Carpentry, Building, Sheet/metal work & welding, Agriculture and Motor Vehicle Mechanics. The programmes are offered on a 1& 1/2 years, with one year set for Theory curriculum at the Centre and the remaining 6 months set aside for Practical Attachment in the relevant industries or companies. With resources available, trainees are given a start up grand that will enable them to purchase basic tools and equipment so that they become self reliant or they are formally employed with other organizations where they are remunerated at a better package, thus improving their quality of life. NODED’s main advocacy is the alleviation of poverty to the OVCs in Zimbabwe with this project and the starting up of income generating projects in these Centres such as carpentry projects, garment making projects, welding projects, agriculture projects and Motor mechanics projects. These income generating projects, if implemented and well managed will make the Training Centres self sustainable thus achieving its objective of economically strengthening the OVCs through livelihoods projects. This will make the trainees get exposed to the practical orientation of the programmes that they will be undergoing in the Training centres.
