BACKGROUND
Welfare of Orphan and Rural Lead Development Trust (WORLD) is a non – government, development organization. The mission is “envisaging a new world where less privileged communities can grow in a safe environment, which is not only secure and healthy, but also with the provision for proper education, income opportunities, good living condition and equal options with which they can confront future”.
Since its inception in the year 2003, it has been working for the vulnerable people irrespective of their caste, creed and race. We have been implementing various developmental programs in the focus areas of community development, social development, economic development and knowledge management.
HISTORY AND MAJOR MILESTONES

2003 Registered as a Trust under Indian Trusts Act in Thiruvannamalai
2003 Preliminary surveys, Building rapport with government institutions of Thiruvannamalai District
2004 Rigorous functioning; Formation of SHGs
2005 Field offices established in Chennai & Thiruvallur Districts
2006 Initiated development programs oriented to children, women and youth in all operational Districts.
2007 Setting up of Administrative Office at Chennai.
2007 Expansion of the operational area and Programme through collaborations and Networking
2007 Formed a forum ( with union of 30 likeminded NGOs) against child Labour and Forced Labour in rice mills and brick kilns of Thiruvallur District
2007 Our professionally skilled members offered consultancy support to other NGOs in the areas of administration, project implementation, Documentation & Research, Trainings
2007-08 Provided Income Generation Programmes in collaboration with social welfare department in Minjur block of Thiruvallur district.
2008 Unemployed youths were trained in various areas and facilitated in job placements around the State
EVOLUTION
The organization started its activities in a small scale by formation of women and youth groups. It has also conducted health camps for the rural people in collaboration with various private and government hospitals. The recognition given by the public, charity organizations, and local administration and government institutions further motivated the organization to involve in other development interventions. The activities gained momentum when we started implementing short term and long term vocational training programs for women and youth. Government institutions and other private institutions supported these programmes.
OBJECTIVES
• To Promote education, health, sanitation to the under privileged sections of the society
• To endorse and facilitate community education program on responsible parenting and child care& immunization
• To generate awareness on prevention of HIV/ AIDS among the community establish voluntary counseling and testing centers.
• To establish community libraries and research centres for undertaking various scientific surveys, research on various social issues.
• To disseminate information by networking with likeminded NGOs
• To encourage economic development initiatives for social and economic empowerment of women
• To advocate with the government for change in policy and for effective implementation
• To grant relief and support to children in difficult circumstances such as child laborers, forced laborers, migrant children, run away children, children in streets, rag pickers.
• To provide awareness to less privileged women and children on their rights
COVERAGE
WORLD is working in more than 200 villages in three districts viz. Thiruvannamalai, Chennai & Thiruvallur and has reached out to 6000 families so far in the target area.
Target Population:
Children : Run away, Street & Working children, Children engaged in labour,
Rag pickers, Orphans
Women : Unorganized workers, slum dwellers, marginalized women, widows, Dalit women
Direct Beneficiaries : 10,000 people, (including children women)
Indirect Beneficiaries : 20,000 people

Women Empowerment Programme
The objective of this program is to empower the vulnerable women through implementing micro-finance, micro enterprise and capacity building programmes
Target group – Women (below poverty line and socially disadvantaged)
Supported by Government, Cooperative Societies, and other network partners.
Total Number of Beneficiaries – @5000 women
Inputs provided: Skill trainings, other
linkages for income generation programmes.
SHGs has been formed and strengthened in target areas. They have educated themselves on the current societal climate in their communities. This kind of strengthening makes them responsible and decision makers in their own lives, family, and community.
Training program on STD/HIV/AIDS
The main objective of the program is to reduce the incidence of STD/HIV/AIDS and TB through awareness and follow-up programs
Target group: women in SHGs, adolescents, daily wages (Agriculture, building construction etc)
Total area covered – Four blocks in Thiruvallur district
Inputs given: Awareness using IEC materials, and through personal interaction
Evening guidance centre:
WORLD has set evening guidance centre for school going children and is provided assistance in learning. It also provides platform for children engaged in labour for education.
Evening guidance centre is a form of supplementary education where various methods are adopted for imparting education. More than 2000 children had been benefited through these centers till date.
New life centre:
New life centers are established for children who are dropped out from mainstream school and engaged in work. various activities have been organized at new life centres to mainstream them back to regular education.
New life centres takes the form of non-formal education where different teaching methodologies are adopted for tutoring and learning. Eight such centers are functioning in our target areas and 750 plus children have benefited through it as of now.
Children rights movement:
The children rights movement program of WORLD is worth mentioning. WORLD initiated this movement and currently is an extremely effective means of spreading information about child rights, child
protection, health promotion. Preventive health care, personal hygiene, gender equality etc., and children are assigned to pass the learning to their siblings, friends, neighbor as well as their own family.
Awareness campaigns about environment and health:
Periodically WORLD conducts awareness campaigns about significance of clean environment, adverse effect of plastic usages, global warming, etc., and need of good health like personal hygiene, healthy diet, etc.,
Creating child friendly schools:
WORLD has initiated creating child friendly school in its target areas. In our experience, it was evident that child friendly schools are dependent upon various factors, one of the chief components is teaching methodology, and conducive learning environment, which
most of the schools lacks. Spaced out from regular learning exercises and teaching methodology, teachers will be imparted with trainings on child friendly schools and its benefits.
Advocacy and documentation:
WORLD realized that its goal cannot be fulfilled without the active participation of the community. Thus world has developed active advocacy and lobbying program in order to speak with policy makers, with the help of actual findings through effective documentation.
FUTURE PLANS
WORLD with its collaborators have planned to take up a critical intervention in this year, for which the plans have been in place.
