Executive Summary
Ethnic conflict continues to pose a significant threat to peace, stability, and development in many regions across the world. These conflicts—rooted in historical grievances, identity-based tensions, political marginalization, resource competition, and social exclusion—undermine community cohesion, disrupt livelihoods, and intensify cycles of violence. In many conflict-affected regions, trust between ethnic groups has eroded, and inter-group relations remain fragile, making communities vulnerable to political manipulation, extremist narratives, and renewed violence.
This project aims to strengthen community peacebuilding mechanisms to reduce ethnic conflict through inclusive dialogue, mediation, conflict resolution training, youth engagement, and community-led reconciliation processes. The initiative will work directly with local leaders, youth groups, women’s associations, religious institutions, traditional authorities, conflict survivors, and government representatives to promote peaceful coexistence and establish long-term structures for conflict prevention.
Over 24 months, the project will target 20 conflict-prone communities, reaching approximately 40,000 people. Through participatory peace dialogues, peace committees, joint community development projects, and early warning systems, the project will build local resilience to conflict, strengthen social cohesion, and create platforms for constructive problem-solving. By empowering communities to lead their own peace processes, this initiative will contribute to lasting peace, reconciliation, and stability.
Background and Problem Statement
Ethnic conflict is one of the most persistent drivers of violence and instability worldwide. Rooted in identity, belonging, and historical grievances, ethnic tensions often evolve into violent conflict when communities feel marginalized or excluded from political, economic, or social opportunities. These divisions are frequently exploited by political actors for personal gain, further deepening animosity.
In many regions, ethnic groups are separated geographically, socially, and politically. Stereotypes, misinformation, and mistrust continue to shape local perceptions. Intermarriage, trade relationships, and shared community activities have declined, reducing opportunities for meaningful interaction. The absence of safe spaces for dialogue has allowed misconceptions and negative narratives to intensify.
Furthermore, weak governance structures, limited conflict resolution skills, and inadequate local mechanisms for dispute resolution have contributed to recurring violence. Youth are particularly vulnerable, as many lack opportunities and are often drawn into ethnic militias or violent groups. Women, meanwhile, bear the brunt of conflict, experiencing displacement, trauma, and social exclusion, yet they remain underrepresented in peace processes.
Without deliberate intervention, ethnic tensions are likely to escalate, threatening long-term peace and development. There is a need for a comprehensive, community-driven peacebuilding initiative that addresses the root causes of conflict while empowering communities to collaboratively resolve disputes, build trust, and create inclusive systems for peace.
