World Habitat Awards 2016/17: Rewarding Innovative Solutions to Current Housing Needs & Problems of the World

The Building and Social Housing Foundation is currently inviting individuals/organisation from all over the world to apply for its World Habitat Awards 2016.

The World Habitat Awards is presented at the World Urban Forum and UN-Habitat Governing Council events in April of each year, increasing opportunities for international exposure, networking and dissemination of the award winning approaches. Two awards are given annually to projects that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems. Every year an award of £10,000 is presented to each of the two winners at the World Urban Forum (even years) and UN-Habitat Governing Council (odd years).

Focus Areas

Housing projects and approaches are sought for 2016/17 Award that:

  • demonstrate practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues faced by countries all around the world
  • can be transferred or adapted for use as appropriate
  • are already being implemented or are completed ie not at design stage or very early stages of development
  • view the term habitat from a broad perspective and bring other benefits as well, such as energy or water saving, income generation, social inclusion, community and individual empowerment, health benefits, capacity building or education.

Benefits

  • International recognition, awards of £10,000 will be made to each of the two winning projects.
  • Trophies will also be presented to the winning projects, and travel and accommodation costs will be met for one representative of each winning project to attend the awards ceremony.

Key Dates

For the World Habitat Awards 2016/17 cycle:

  • 29th April 2016 – Final deadline for receipt of submissions
  • June 2016 – Notification of shortlisted projects
  • 1st August 2016 – Deadline for further information from shortlisted projects
  • August 2016 to January 2017 – Evaluation of shortlisted projects
  • February 2017 – Announcement of the winners of the World Habitat Awards 2016/17
  • April 2017 – Presentation of the Awards at the UN-Habitat Governing Council

Eligibility Criteria

  • Any individual, organization or government who has an innovative and practical solution to housing needs and problems from any country of the world.
  • More than one entry can be made by the same individual or organization.
  • Entries should relate to housing projects and processes that are either completed or in progress. Those that are at design stage only or in the very early stages of development cannot be considered.
  • Previous entrants can re-submit in subsequent years providing that the project has been further developed in the intervening time period.

Interreg NWE Programme to Improve Economic, Environmental, Territorial & Social Development in North-West Europe

The Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) Programme invites public and private organisations to submit applications in the framework of the second call for proposals for the 2014-2020 periods. The Programme encourages public, scientific, private and civil society organisations to cooperate with a view to improving the economic, environmental, territorial and social development of Europe’s regions.

Program Objectives

The specific objectives are:

  • To enhance innovation performance of enterprises throughout North-West Europe regions.
  • To facilitate the implementation of low-carbon, energy and climate protection strategies to reduce GHG emissions in North-West Europe.
  • To facilitate the uptake of low carbon technologies, products, processes and services in sectors with high energy saving potential, to reduce GHG emissions in North-West Europe.
  • To facilitate the implementation of transnational low-carbon solutions in transport systems to reduce GHG-emissions in North-West Europe.
  • To optimize (re)use of material and natural resources in North-West Europe.

Funding available

€372 million of ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) will be allocated to the most qualitative and innovative projects.

Eligibility criteria

  • The Programme targets all or parts of 8 participating countries, including 7 EU Member States (Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom) and the non-Member State Switzerland.
  • A wide range of bodies are entitled to take part in NWE project partnerships including national, regional and local authorities,universities, R&D agencies, non-profit organisations as well as private partners, including profit-making partners (e.g. SMEs).
  • Projects should bring together partners from at least three different countries (usually more) of which two need to be from within the NWE area.

The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice: Submit LOIs for Astraea’s International Fund 2016!

The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is accepting applications for its Astraea’s International Fund to support groups led by  LGBTQI communities working for progressive social change, addressing oppression based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression, and advancing work for racial, economic and gender justice.

Grants Information

The fund strengthens LGBTQI groups by providing flexible general support grants ranging from $5,000 to $30,000 per year.

Priorities

The fund prioritizes funding to groups that:

  • Led by and targeted to lesbian/bisexual/queer women
  • Led by and targeted to transgender and/or intersex people
  • Led by and for LGBTQI communities that are historically marginalized and underresourced within LGBTQI communities (e.g. youth, elders, ethnic minorities, migrants/refugees, low-income people, people with disabilities, sex workers, etc.).
  • Have active participation and leadership from the communities most affected by issues that the group works on.
  • Are inclusive and reflect the diversity of the geographic region in which they do their work.
  • Show an understanding of the connections amongst different oppressions facing LGBTQI people, and have a commitment to address other forms of oppression such as oppression based on class, race, ethnicity, age, physical and mental ability, gender, national identity, and religious affiliation.
  • Develop leadership and build communities’ capacity to achieve social change, particularly through proposals that strengthen an organization’s ability to organize.
  • Organizing may be defined as activities that actively engage people affected by societal problems in the process of identifying and pursuing solutions.
  • Works in alliance and/or builds coalition with other justice movement organizations (e.g. sex worker rights, human rights, etc.)
  • Have organizational structures and practices in place that reflect social justice principles
  • Groups that are based in countries/locations that do not yet have significant LGBTQI resources
  • Have limited access to traditional sources of funding

Eligibility Criteria

  • Based in Africa, Asia/the Pacific, Eastern Europe/Commonwealth of Independent States, Latin America/the Caribbean, or the Middle East.
  • Led by and/or for LGBTQI communities. Non-LGBTI-led groups must demonstrate how they address LGBTI human rights issues and how they involve LGBTI’s in organizational and programmatic decision-making.
  • Doing work towards long-term social change, on issues affecting LGBTQI people and/or people who are penalized, persecuted or harassed for their gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation.
  • Non-governmental organizations, not-for-profit groups, or the equivalent, with organizational budgets of $500,000USD or less.
  • Groups that have been active for at least one year at the time should send in their proposal. A group which has been active for less than one year may apply if they demonstrate their group’s ability to sustain activities over the long-term and illustrate how a grant would help them to build their organization’s capabilities.

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and OCLC are seeking applications for the Jay Jordan IFLA / OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program to provide early career development and continuing education for library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies.

Up to five individuals are selected each year for participation in this intensive four-week fellowship program based at OCLC’s headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA. The program gives fellows opportunities to meet with leading information practitioners and explore topics including information technologies, library operations and management, and global cooperative librarianship.

The fellows visit many libraries, cultural heritage institutions and library organizations. The fellows also observe OCLC’s governance structure in action, gaining insight into issues affecting the global library cooperative. Fellows give presentations about their home countries and libraries and discuss real-world solutions to the challenges facing libraries today.

Eligibility Criteria

Promising library and information science professionals who are in early stages of career development and who meet all of the qualifications are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must:

  • Be employed in a library or information center.
  • Have a qualifying degree in library or information science. The qualifying degree may vary depending upon country of origin, but should be the general library or information science degree recognized in the country. Normally a PhD is not considered a qualifying degree, because the Fellowship program is targeted for early career librarians.
  • Have obtained the qualifying degree between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2015.
  • Have at least three years, but no more than eight years, of library or information science For the 2017 program, applicants must have library or information science experience that begins no earlier than January 1, 2008 and no later than January 1, 2013.
  • Be a legal national from mentioned above countries and be working as a librarian or information science professional in that country.
  • Read and speak English proficiently.

The Global Forest Watch Liberia Technical Assistant will perform the following functions-

  • Lead development and implementation of technical aspects of WRI-GFW’s activities in Liberia – beginning with the development of the Liberia Forest Atlas.
  • Lead the conceptualization, development and implementation of GIS-based tools and analytical methods in support of WRI-GFW’s Liberian partners (with a focus on the Forestry Development Authority).
  • Support communicating about forest data and analysis (from GFW and the Liberia Forest Atlas) to technical and non-technical audiences at national and international levels (e.g. by producing maps, graphs, figures, contributing to writing blog posts and articles).
  • Respond to technical inquiries related to WRI-GFW’s Liberia work.
  • Represent WRI-GFW and give presentations at conferences and workshops, when necessary.
  • Provide technical assistance to relevant processes such as land use planning, monitoring of logging activities, enhancement of protected areas management.
  • Carry out field activities to ground truth data.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have-

  • Degree or certificate in Geography, GIS, Information Systems Natural Resource Management or other related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of full time relevant GIS work experience.
  • Proficiency in standard GIS software (ESRI, Quantum GIS)Strong analytical skills, including raster analysis, generating statistics and indicators from spatial data, automating common tasks.
  • Ability to work on a variety of projects while meeting tight deadlines.

  • Cultivate ideas and tools to integrate relevant data sets from Indian agencies, interalia ISRO, NRSA, DMA, and various ministries, departments, universities and civil society researchers.
  • Assist with fundraising proposals and background information and writing for prospective project funders.
  • Supervise the work of junior researchers and interns, as appropriate.
  • Develop analytical framework for assessing regional water risk and use Aqueduct and local data in close collaboration with Water Program staff to apply to metropolitan areas like Bangalore.
  • Evaluation and design of institutional mechanisms for the operationalization of the tools, processes and systems for regional and urban water management.
  • Work with WRI water and economics experts to develop customized analysis of watershed solutions and economic tradeoffs among potential water risk reduction strategies.
  • Help to ground-truth results and conclusions associated with forthcoming forest-water maps in specific watersheds in India.
  • Support efforts to communicate about WRI’s water-related work in India, including analytical content to non-technical audiences, media, and existing and prospective funders.
  • Represent WRI’s Water Program and WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities work through presentations at relevant conferences and workshops.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have-

  • Master’s degree required in hydrology, water resources management or a related environmental science or policy discipline.
  • Minimum 5 – 8 years of highly relevant, full-time work experience, dealing in natural water management and how water management can be done in urban planning.
  • Excellent academic performance and strong analytical capability. Should had worked in the water related projects, in conservation of natural water bodies.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly both orally and in writing, with excellent demonstrated skills in English.

  • Substantial program management experience, including in senior management roles and a demonstrated ability to coordinate across teams and research partners in multiple countries.

  • Ensure all programs and international office project/program/International office directors and mangers understand how to access and interpret financial reports, WRI’s financial model, etc. and that they have what they need to be successful. Participate as part of the global team to address financial issues.
  • Certify that Programs consistently receive a high level and quality of customer service from Admin/Operations staff without compromising internal controls through surveys or other means.
  • Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual and five year Admin/Operations Efficiency and Effectiveness Plan.
  • Ensure clear communication to staff on issues that affect them with clear instructions on what’s expected of them, coupled with the rationale for any changes.
  • Provide support as necessary during the annual audits and other projects assigned by the Executive Team or Board.
  • Develop a robust revenue pipeline tracking approach to allow validation of budgets, hiring forecasts and space needs, identify level of effort for fundraising, cash flow, etc.
  • Develop a process to minimize Foreign Exchange risk.
  • Implement a robust sub-grant/contracts management and monitoring system.
  • Ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
  • Coordinate and liaise with the Finance and Investment Committee of the board of directors; assist with mission based investing of our endowment.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have-

  • 12-15 years overall finance and accounting experience with progressive responsibility, especially with exposure to international operations; 7-10 years leading accounting/finance teams.
  • MBA or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • CPA Certification Preferred; Top Tier Accounting Firm experience helpful.
  • Consulting experience, specifically including successful implementation and oversight of organization-wide process improvement and other initiatives.
  • Strong leader, demonstrated ability to develop and keep staff motivated.
  • Strong professional communication and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with senior executives, including members of the board.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Experience with multiple financial systems helpful; suggested systems might include Hyperion, Oracle, Deltek (Costpoint and/or Contributor), and SAP.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, OMB A-122, OMB A-133, FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) and technical pronouncements.
  • Superb cross-cultural interpersonal skills with an impressive history of forging strong relationships with multiple stakeholders, strong listening skills, and an ability to relate well to people at all levels.
