Executive Summary
Communities affected by social, ethnic, political, or economic tensions often experience cycles of mistrust, misinformation, and violence that undermine long-term development and social cohesion. Young people, who make up a significant proportion of the population in conflict-prone regions, are frequently portrayed as drivers of unrest. However, they also possess immense potential to act as peacebuilders, dialogue facilitators, and agents of positive change when given appropriate platforms, skills, and support.
This proposal outlines a comprehensive Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Through Youth Dialogue initiative aimed at empowering young people aged 18–30 to actively engage in dialogue, mediation, and collaborative problem-solving within their communities. The project will create safe and inclusive spaces for youth from diverse backgrounds to share experiences, address grievances, challenge stereotypes, and co-design peaceful solutions to local conflicts.
Through structured dialogue sessions, leadership training, peace education workshops, and community outreach activities, the project seeks to strengthen mutual understanding, reduce tensions, and promote a culture of non-violence. The initiative will also build the capacity of youth leaders to sustain peacebuilding efforts beyond the project period by equipping them with practical skills in communication, conflict analysis, and community engagement.
Over a 12-month period, the project will directly engage at least 300 young people and indirectly reach more than 5,000 community members through awareness campaigns, public dialogues, and local peace actions. By placing youth at the center of conflict prevention efforts, this project aims to contribute to long-term peace, social cohesion, and inclusive development.
Background and Problem Statement
Across many regions, communities are increasingly affected by social polarization, identity-based divisions, political tensions, and competition over limited resources. These conflicts often escalate due to misinformation, lack of dialogue, exclusion of marginalized voices, and limited opportunities for peaceful engagement. Youth are particularly vulnerable in such contexts, as unemployment, social exclusion, and lack of representation can fuel frustration and make young people susceptible to manipulation or radicalization.
Despite being deeply affected by conflict, young people are often excluded from formal peace processes and decision-making spaces. Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms may fail to reflect youth perspectives, while existing platforms for dialogue are frequently inaccessible or dominated by older stakeholders. This exclusion not only limits the effectiveness of peacebuilding efforts but also reinforces feelings of marginalization among young people.
At the same time, youth possess unique strengths that position them as key actors in conflict prevention. They are often more open to new ideas, more connected through social networks, and more willing to challenge harmful norms. When supported through dialogue-based initiatives, young people can act as bridges between divided groups, promote tolerance, and influence positive change at the grassroots level.
However, many youth lack the skills, confidence, and institutional support needed to engage constructively in peacebuilding. There is a pressing need for structured, inclusive, and youth-led dialogue initiatives that address local conflict drivers, promote mutual understanding, and translate dialogue into collective action. This project responds directly to this need by creating sustainable mechanisms for youth engagement in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
Project Goal and Objectives
Overall Goal
To prevent conflict and promote sustainable peace by empowering young people to engage in inclusive dialogue, strengthen social cohesion, and lead community-based peacebuilding initiatives.
Specific Objectives
- To provide safe and inclusive platforms for youth from diverse backgrounds to engage in structured dialogue on conflict-related issues.
- To strengthen the capacity of young people in conflict analysis, communication, mediation, and peacebuilding practices.
- To reduce mistrust, stereotypes, and tensions among youth from different communities through sustained interaction and collaboration.
- To support youth-led peace initiatives that address local conflict drivers and promote non-violent solutions.
- To foster long-term youth participation in community decision-making and peace processes.
Target Group and Beneficiaries
The primary beneficiaries of this project will be young people aged 18–30 from diverse social, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds, particularly those living in conflict-affected or high-tension areas. Special attention will be given to the inclusion of young women, marginalized youth, and those with limited access to civic spaces.
Secondary beneficiaries will include community leaders, local authorities, educators, and civil society organizations who will benefit from improved youth engagement, reduced tensions, and strengthened community cohesion. The wider community will also benefit indirectly through increased awareness of peaceful conflict resolution and the positive role of youth in promoting peace.
Project Activities and Methodology
The project will adopt a participatory, youth-centered, and conflict-sensitive approach. Activities will be designed to encourage open dialogue, mutual learning, and collective action.
- Youth Dialogue Forums
- A series of structured dialogue forums will be organized, bringing together youth from different backgrounds to discuss issues related to identity, discrimination, grievances, and local conflict dynamics. These forums will be facilitated by trained moderators using participatory methods that ensure respectful and inclusive engagement.
- Peacebuilding and Leadership Workshops
- Participants will attend capacity-building workshops focused on conflict analysis, non-violent communication, mediation, active listening, and leadership. The workshops will combine theoretical learning with practical exercises, role-plays, and group discussions to strengthen participants’ confidence and skills.
- Youth Exchange and Exposure Visits
- To broaden perspectives and foster empathy, the project will organize exchange visits between youth from different communities. These visits will allow participants to experience diverse realities, challenge preconceived notions, and build relationships based on trust and shared values.
- Youth-Led Peace Initiatives
- Small grants and mentorship support will be provided to youth groups to design and implement community-based peace initiatives. These may include awareness campaigns, cultural events, sports for peace activities, community dialogues, or digital storytelling projects that promote tolerance and non-violence.
- Community Dialogue and Outreach
- Youth participants will facilitate community-level dialogues and outreach activities to share project learnings, engage broader audiences, and encourage intergenerational understanding. These activities will help ensure that dialogue extends beyond the project participants and contributes to wider social impact.
Expected Results and Outcomes
By the end of the project, the following outcomes are expected:
- Increased capacity of youth to engage in constructive dialogue and conflict prevention.
- Improved relationships and trust among youth from different communities.
- Reduced stereotypes, prejudices, and misinformation related to conflict issues.
- Enhanced youth participation in community peacebuilding and decision-making processes.
- Implementation of youth-led initiatives that contribute to local conflict prevention and social cohesion.
In the longer term, the project is expected to contribute to more resilient communities, reduced likelihood of violent conflict, and a stronger culture of dialogue and non-violence.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitoring and evaluation will be integrated throughout the project to ensure accountability, learning, and impact measurement. Baseline and endline assessments will be conducted to measure changes in attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors related to conflict and peacebuilding. Regular monitoring tools such as attendance records, participant feedback forms, and facilitator reports will be used to track progress.
Qualitative methods, including focus group discussions and case studies, will capture personal experiences and stories of change. Lessons learned will be documented and shared with stakeholders to inform future peacebuilding initiatives.
Sustainability
Sustainability is a core consideration of this project. By building the skills and leadership capacity of young people, the initiative aims to create a pool of youth peace ambassadors who can continue dialogue and peacebuilding efforts beyond the project period. Partnerships with local organizations, educational institutions, and community leaders will further support the continuation of activities.
Youth-led initiatives developed during the project will be designed with long-term viability in mind, encouraging community ownership and local resource mobilization. The networks and relationships formed through the project will serve as a foundation for ongoing collaboration and collective action.
Organizational Capacity
The implementing organization has extensive experience in youth engagement, conflict prevention, and community development. With a dedicated team of trained facilitators, project managers, and local partners, the organization is well-positioned to deliver this initiative effectively. Strong relationships with community stakeholders and a participatory approach ensure cultural sensitivity, inclusiveness, and local relevance.
Conclusion
Conflict prevention and peacebuilding require inclusive, forward-looking approaches that address root causes and empower those most affected. By placing youth at the center of dialogue and peace efforts, this project recognizes young people not as passive beneficiaries but as active contributors to sustainable peace.
Through structured dialogue, capacity-building, and youth-led action, the Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Through Youth Dialogue initiative offers a practical and impactful response to local tensions. With adequate support, young people can become powerful advocates for understanding, cooperation, and non-violence, helping to build more peaceful and resilient communities for generations to come.
