Fair wages and safe working environments are fundamental to social justice and sustainable economic development. However, millions of workers globally continue to face low pay, job insecurity, and unsafe labor conditions. Labor unions serve as a powerful mechanism for advocating workers’ rights, ensuring collective bargaining, and holding employers accountable.
This project seeks to strengthen the role of labor unions in promoting fair wages, workplace safety, and equitable labor policies. Through capacity building, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with governments, employers, and NGOs, the project will create a stronger and more inclusive labor movement. By empowering unions and workers, the initiative aims to promote decent work for all, as envisioned by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Background and Rationale
Workers remain the backbone of every economy, yet many industries continue to underpay and overwork them, often in unsafe environments. In developing nations, informal sectors dominate, where labor laws are weakly enforced and workplace hazards go unreported. Unions are crucial in these settings, as they represent workers’ collective interests and help negotiate better terms of employment.
Despite their importance, many unions face challenges such as inadequate training, limited resources, and weak policy engagement. Strengthening their organizational capacity will not only improve labor conditions but also promote stability and productivity in the workforce.
This project responds to these challenges by enhancing the advocacy and negotiation skills of unions and by building platforms for constructive dialogue between workers, employers, and government representatives.
