The 2012 Roger N. Baldwin Medal of Liberty Award of Human Rights First seeks to recognize an individual or organization’s commitment to international human rights advocacy. There is an award of $25,000 prize which is presented during a Spring 2012 award ceremony in New York City.
The award, established in 1989, honors the human rights legacy of Roger N. Baldwin, the principal founder of the American Civil Liberties Union and the International League for Human Rights.
This year’s award will go to an individual or organization that has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to human rights advocacy in one or more of the following areas:
- Social Networking and Internet Freedom
- Religious Freedom
- LGBT Rights
- Freedom from Torture.
The winner is selected by a distinguished committee of human rights advocates and supporters. The selection committee will consider a number of criteria, including whether the nominee’s work is unique or particularly distinctive, as well as if it has been effective in advancing human rights in a country other than the United States. In addition, the committee will consider if the nominee has faced any risk or insecurity as a result of the work, and if their safety and work would benefit significantly from receiving the Baldwin Award – either financially or as a result of publicity.
