Tanenbaum is seeking nominations for the Peacemaker in Action Award 2011-2012 aimed at recognizing religiously motivated men and women who put their lives at risk to advance peace in areas of armed conflict around the world.
Tanenbaum aims to acknowledge and honor local peacemakers who are making this world a reality and go unrecognized without their full potential being realized. Tanenbaum acknowledges and helps to empower these individuals, and makes the lessons of their work broadly known.
Tanenbaum uses a broad definition of peacemaking to encompass the multitude of activities that can transform armed conflict and build peace. Past awardees play diverse peacemaking and peacebuilding roles, ranging from educators, clergy, and NGO directors to government officials, negotiators, and activists—and many more.
AWARD CRITERIA
The following five criteria must be evident in candidates’ nomination materials:
Religious Motivation. The Peacemaker’s work toward peace is fueled by his or her religious beliefs. Some Peacemakers hold formal positions of religious leadership; many others do not. What is important, however, is that their religious beliefs drive their peace work.
Armed Conflict. They are working or have (recently) worked in an area of armed conflict.
At Risk. They have jeopardized their life and/or liberty in the pursuit of peace.
Locally Based. They are closely connected to the conflict situation “on the ground,” at the local level. Most Peacemaker awardees are indigenous to the communities they serve. A few have moved to conflict zones and spent many years working closely with local communities.
Relatively unknown. Despite their impact, they have not received significant international recognition and support.
