CIDA Contribution:
The current CFLI proposes to contribute $120, 000 in the year 2011-2012
CIDA’s 2008-2009 disbursements for projects and initiatives in Argentina: $3.97 million.
Embassy Canada:
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives is managed locally by the Embassy of Canada to Argentina and Paraguay.
Description:
Since 1997, Canada’s development cooperation in Argentina has focused on transferring Canadian expertise and methodologies to contribute to Argentina’s:
– ability to deliver programming, particularly in the areas of health and education; and
– efforts in public sector reform.
A major Canadian development initiative in Argentina has been the Canada-Southern Cone Technology Transfer Fund, which ran from 1997-2007, with all projects closing by 2010. The fund has focused on sharing Canadian knowledge, expertise and technology with partner organizations in the Southern Cone region.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) maintains a limited assistance program in Argentina and there will be no new long-term projects planned by Canada in this country. However, Argentina can benefit from various programs, such as:
– geographic programs including the Inter-American Program;
– multilateral programs including the International Humanitarian Assistance program;
– other programs that allow institutions, associations, Canadian and international non-governmental organizations, and private sector enterprises to receive funding from CIDA to execute projects worldwide.
Issues:
Through funding for small projects that offer direct social, economic, or technical assistance to local populations, the CFLI’s aims to contribute towards the overall goal of poverty reduction in Argentina.
