Two day international conference exploring relationship between culture and socio-political along with economic change began at Brac Centre Inn at Dhaka in Srilanka on 18th and 19th December, 2011. The Inter-Asian Cultural Studies Society (IACSS), a network of universities and research institutions from East, South East and South Asia, organizes conferences every alternate year.
The conference invites paper from around 80 countries including China, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, India, the United States and Australia. Moreover, they will present papers on cultural transformations throughout the world. This consortium explores new ways of creating an image of Asia in the new century keeping in mind cultural, social and political histories. The Department of English and Humanities of Brac University and Brac Development Institute are organizing the conference. English and Humanities Department Chairperson, Prof Firdous Azim in her welcome address said Asian universities should strive to incorporate more post-graduate programmes on cultural studies. She said that this would help in creating an enlarged academic framework from the perspective of Asian countries. She added by saying “Now, all we get are western discourses”. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman, Prof AK Azad Chowdhury was present as the chief guest along with Brac University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ainun Nishar at the programme. Dhaka’s Central Women’s University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Perween Hasan and Ashish Rajadhyaksha from Bangalore’s Centre for the Study of Culture and Society (CSCS) presented the important papers at the inaugural session. The conference will continue to day with presentation on varied topics including sexuality and feminism, art, theatre, cinema and others as well. The conference will start at 9:30 am and end at 7:00pm at Brac University.
