The Uplands Program at Hohenheim University is inviting scientists, government officers, development practitioners and graduate and post-graduate students to attend the International Scientific Conference on “Sustainable Land Use and Rural Development in Mountain Areas” to be held at Hohenheim University, Stuttgart, Germany on 16-18 April 2012.
The participants will have the opportunity to make a scientific contribution through a 15-minute oral or a 5-min poster presentation during the conference. In this context, prospective participants are invited to submit extended abstracts of their study.
The conference aims at bringing together concerned people from across the globe so that they could share knowledge, lessons and experiences as related to sustainable mountain development. The conference will also try to identify unique challenges and opportunities in mountain development of each country, and similarities in problems as well as possible solutions.
Themes
The organizers encourage the submission of interdisciplinary research along the following themes, which will be sessions of the conference.
- Soil Care in Mountain Landscapes
- Supplying, Using, Sharing, and Cycling of Matter and Water
- Linking Highland Farmers to Modern Food Chains
- Land Use and Land Cover Change
- Sustainable and Competitive Livestock Systems
- People Participation in Natural Resource Management
Focus of the Conference
- The conference has a global focus but with particular emphasis on mountain development in low-income countries.
- The focus is on sharing scientific knowledge that cuts across scientific disciplines and combines insights from the social and natural sciences.
- Particular emphasis is put on studies that discuss how policies and innovations can contribute to sustainable mountain development.
Target group
- Scientists of any discipline dealing with sustainable mountain development.
- Government officers, development practitioners and other non-academics interested to learn about the state-of-the art in research about sustainable mountain development and eager to share their experiences.
- Graduate and post-graduate students studying agriculture, economics, geography, or any other science related to development.
About the Uplands Program
The Uplands Program is a long-term interdisciplinary research program by research institutions in Germany, Thailand, and Vietnam. The program is engaged in conducting research related to sustainable land use and rural development in Southeast Asia. The institutions include Hohenheim University in Germany, Chiang Mai University, Kasetsart University, Mae Jo University, and Silpakorn University in Thailand, and Hanoi University of Agriculture, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, and the National Institute of Animal Husbandry in Vietnam.
