Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is seeking applications for fully funded PhD position in the natural and mathematical sciences in a world-class research environment on the outskirts of Vienna. The PhD lasts 4 to 5 years, depending on whether a student is admitted with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree.
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is a young international institute dedicated to basic research and graduate education in the natural and mathematical sciences, located in Klosterneuburg on the outskirts of Vienna. Established jointly by the federal government of Austria and the provincial government of Lower Austria, the Institute was inaugurated in 2009 and will grow to about 90 research groups by 2026.
The goal of the IST Scholar PhD program is to produce intellectually broad, curious, open-minded scientists who are able to approach problems from different angles and can collaborate with diverse types of scientists.
Eligibility Criteria
- Highly qualified students from all disciplines of the natural sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, and any related interdisciplinary areas, who are committed to pursuing their scientific career in an international research environment, are invited to apply.
- All applicants must hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), or anticipate the completion of the degree before September 2016.
- Participating students are expected to be proficient in written and oral English.

- Students who have a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in the following (or interdisciplinary) areas are eligible to apply: Biology, Computer Science, Neuroscience, Mathematics, Physics and interdisciplinary or related areas.
- Undergraduate performance is evaluated based on the quality of the undergraduate program, overall grades, grades in specific fields/courses, and other scientific distinctions (e.g. publications, seminar talks or presentations at conferences).
- Reference letters are evaluated in terms of how strongly professors or senior scientists who know the candidate well support the candidate’s application for the PhD program.
- The statement of purpose should reveal the candidate’s knowledge of the big questions in the field and will be evaluated regarding the preparedness, motivation, and potential of the candidate.
