The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) is currently inviting applications from research institutions in Japan for the Grant for Global Sustainability (GGS), a new initiative supporting research related to implementation of the global post-2015 development agenda.
The UNU-IAS is a leading research and teaching institute based in Tokyo, Japan. It has been working towards a sustainable future, through policy-oriented research and capacity development focused on sustainability and its social, economic and environmental dimensions. UNU-IAS serves the international community, making valuable and innovative contributions to high-level policymaking and debates within the UN system.
Research Themes
Proposals must focus on one of the following two themes.
- Theme 1: Study for the achievement of inclusive development
- Proposals in this research theme must address the implementation and achievement of inclusive development. Specific areas include: development of educational system, human/social/economic development, good governance and peace building.
- Theme 2: Solutions to challenges the Earth system faces
- Proposals in research theme 2 must develop solutions to the challenges faced by the Earth system for sustainable development. Specific areas include: natural capital, biodiversity, climate change, global change, technology and resilience.
Grants & Duration
- Duration of project: maximum 3 years
- Grant: 10 million Japanese yen (including administration cost)
Eligibility Criteria
- Educational and research institutions based in Japan are eligible to apply for these grants.
- Research proposals must be based on the themes above.
