The Department for International Development (DFID) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) are jointly inviting research proposals from developing and developed countries for China and Africa Research Program 2014. The major purpose of the grant program is to critically evaluate what lessons China’s own economic development transformation can offer other developing countries – in particular in low-income Africa.
Academics from developing and developed countries should work together in a single project with principal investigator from anywhere in the world. The grant amount will be of between £200,000 and £2 million for maximum four years duration.
Research projects should do one of the following –
- Take as a starting point a developmental challenge facing Africa and examine possible solutions linked to recent experience from China’s own economic development
- Build understanding of an aspect of China’s engagement with Africa relevant to the continent’s economic development
Eligibility Criteria –
- All UK Higher Education Institutions that receive grant funding from one of the UK higher education funding bodies; Research Institutes (RIs), for which Research Councils have established a long term involvement as major funder as part of the national research base; other independent research organizations who possess an existing in-house capacity to carry out research that materially extends and enhances the UK research base and are able to demonstrate an independent capability to undertake and lead research program are eligible to apply.
- The organization must be a legal entity which is not owned, established or primarily funded for research purposes by any single part of the public sector or by a business.
- Academics from developing and developed countries should work together in a single project with principal investigator from anywhere in the world.
