The Open Society Foundations Civil Society Scholar Awards (CSSA) is open for doctoral students and full-time faculty members in select developing countries. The CSSA supports international academic mobility offering doctoral students and university faculty to access resources that enrich socially engaged research and critical scholarship in their home country or region.

Applications can be made for 2 to 10 months long projects between 1 August 2015 to 31 August 2016. Maximum financial support for doctoral students is limited to $10,000 and for faculty members to $15,000.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be doctoral students within social sciences and humanities.
- Candidates must be citizens of the following countries: Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Haiti, Kosovo, Laos, Libya, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Serbia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, or Yemen.
- Requests for support for first year tuition and fees will be considered on the basis of a clearly demonstrated need from doctoral students who have gained admission to universities outside of their home country.
- Applicants with permanent resident status or dual citizenship in Australia, Canada, European Union, New Zealand, Nordic countries, or USA are not eligible to apply.
- Students or faculty currently enrolled in Master’s degree programs are NOT eligible to apply.
Complete application documents include – completed application form, copy of the identification pages of passport(s)/any visas the applicant holds for the country in which s/he is studying; scan of current official graduate school transcript (doctoral applicants) or the final transcript of highest degree obtained (faculty applicants); a letter f invitation from a faculty member or senior administrator at the institution where the applicant’s research will take place, if applicable (scanned and attached to application).
In addition, doctoral student applications must also include an official letter from applicant’s institution confirming their enrollment status, department, and expected completion date (scanned and attached to application); a personal reference letter from an academic or professional in applicant’s field in their home country; and an academic reference letter.
Additional documents for faculty applicants are – an official letter from their institution of employment endorsing the proposed time away from their position (scanned and attached to application); and an academic reference letter.
