The Royal Society Africa is currently inviting applications for Leverhulme-Royal Society Africa Award Scheme from scientists who wish to develop a collaborative research project between the UK and research institutions in Ghana/Tanzania. The main objective of this award scheme is to encourage develop excellence in science in Ghana and Tanzania and to strengthen the research and training capacity of the African institution. Under this scheme, 3 year funding will be provided towards research expenses and costs for mobility and equipment. This scheme is funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
Award Value
Awards will offer a maximum of £60,000 per annum to cover research expenses and costs for mobility, including up to £10,000 per annum for a PhD Student Bursary. Up to £10,000 per year of the award may be used to purchase or maintain equipment. The total maximum amount of award is £180,000. The award does not cover costs for salaries, per diems, course or tuition fees.
The award lasts for three years.
Eligibility Criteria
The scheme covers all areas of the life and physical sciences, including engineering. Applications covering the following five identified national research priorities in Ghana and Tanzania are particularly encouraged: agriculture (including animal health); water and sanitation; basic human health research (including medicinal chemistry); biodiversity (including medicinal plants and green chemistry) and energy (including renewables).
Both the UK applicant and the Ghanaian/Tanzanian applicant must:
– have a PhD or have extensive experience at an equivalent level
– have a proven track record of training students at Master’s and Doctoral level
– have a proven track record of publishing in both national and international journals
– be based in the respective countries at the time of the application
Data Protection
– The Society will use information provided in the application for processing the application, making any consequential award, for the payment, monitoring, maintenance and review of the Award, and general Society business.
– To meet the Society’s obligations for public accountability and the dissemination of information, details of Awards are also to be made available on the Society’s web site and other publicly available databases, and in reports, documents and mailing lists.
Research Management
– Unless otherwise stated, all awards must be held in a UK university or not-for-profit research organisation (except for Research Council Institutes).
– It is the responsibility of the Host Organisation and the Award Holder to ensure that the research is organised and undertaken within a framework of best practice that recognises the various factors that may influence or impact on a research project.
– The Host Organisation must have in place formal written procedures for the handling of allegations of scientific fraud or research misconduct.
– The Host Organisation and the Award Holder must ensure that, before the research commences and during the full Award Period, all the necessary ethical, legal and regulatory requirements in order to conduct the research are met, and all the necessary licences and approvals have been obtained.
