Indian Ministry of Science and Technology and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are pleased to invite applications for innovative projects “Next Generation Toilet”. The mission of this program is to develop safe and affordable sanitation that effectively removes human waste from the environment while recovering components that can be recycled.
Objectives–
- Creation of Totally Sanitized Environments – By 2017: The end of open defecation and achievement of a clean environment where human faecal waste is safely contained and disposed.
- Adoption of Improved Hygiene Practices – By 2020: All people in the rural areas, especially children and caregivers, adopt safe hygiene practices during all times.
- Solid and Liquid Waste Management – By 2022: Effective management of solid and liquid waste such that the village environment is kept clean at all times.
Thematic areas-
- Reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity
- Scientific and technical solutions for infectious diseases
- Strengthening India’s scientific translation capacity
- Scientific and technical advances related to agriculture
- Scientific advancement in food and nutrition
- Other joint interests that may arise
Eligibility & Criteria-
- The Grand Challenge India (GCI) application can be made by an Indian Individual Researcher/Entrepreneur or an Indian entity/consortium established under any relevant statute, agreement, rule or regulation in India as the Lead applicant.
- The goal of this program is to fund a portfolio of Indian-led pilot projects.
- GCI Applicant organizations must be non-profit organizations, for-profit Companies, recognized institutions such as academia, National laboratories, research institutions, medical research institutions and foundations that have the required facilities to successfully execute the activities in their technical area. Where the opportunity exists or project requires, research organizations in other countries to be partners/collaborators in the GCI Application are encouraged.
