The Critical Ecosystem Profile Fund invites civil society organizations to submit proposals for grants for “Eastern Afromontane Biodiversity Hotspot”. Main aim is to help with rapid response fund and to save “Key Biodiversity Areas” from urgent and immediate threat. This call grants maximum funds up to $10,000 USD.
The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) is a joint initiative of l’Agence Française de Développement, Conservation International (CI), the European Union, the Global Environment Facility, the Government of Japan, the MacArthur Foundation, and the World Bank. A fundamental goal is to ensure civil society is engaged in biodiversity conservation.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible countries are Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
- Applications are invited from non-governmental organizations, community groups, private enterprises, universities and other civil societies.
- Organizations must have their own bank account and be authorized under relevant national laws to receive charitable contributions.
- Government-owned enterprises or institutions are eligible only if they can demonstrate that the enterprise or institution:
has a legal personality independent of any government agency or actor;
has the authority to apply for and receive private funds; and
may not assert a claim of sovereign immunity.
Grants cannot be used for:
- the purchase of land, involuntary resettlement of people including displacement of land uses or impeding access to traditional uses of natural resources, or activities that negatively affect physical cultural resources, including those important to local communities;
- activities adversely affecting Indigenous Peoples or where these communities have not provided their broad support to the project activities; or
- the removal or alteration of any physical cultural property (including sites having archaeological, paleontological, historical, religious, or unique natural values);
- activities in Afromontane KBAs which were previously included in the Eastern Arc and Coastal Forest Hotspot (Kenya and Tanzania) – these are:

How to Apply:
Applicants are required to submit Letters of Inquiry with respect to:
Strategic Direction 2 – To improve the protection and management of the network of KBAs (Key Biodiversity Areas / high conservation value areas) throughout the hotspot.
Investment Priority 2.2 – We are looking for projects that will support the role of civil society organizations in the application of site safeguard policies and procedures in order to avoid or minimize / mitigate ongoing and emerging threats on critical biodiversity habitats posed by development projects. These safeguard policies and procedures include (among others):
- The strengthening of environmental impact assessment implementation;
- Application of the World Bank policy on natural habitats;
- Application of the Equator Principles;
- International Finance Corp Standards;
- Certification and Accreditation Schemes.
We will also support interventions of CSOs such advocacy and technical input to environmental impact assessments, review of such assessments, support for consultations with local stakeholders, the building of alliances across different interest groups, and the development of economic alternatives.
