The European Union seeks grant proposals from grass-root organizations aimed at supporting the local civil society initiatives and backing their contribution to democracy and good governance in Myanmar. EU recognises grassroots organisations as key actors in fostering social capital and the democratic development in their societies.
To date, this programme has provided support to projects addressing issues ranging from community development, and capacity building of local civil society, to promotion of fundamental freedoms. Projects have been selected through both global calls for proposals and since the introduction of the country-based support scheme last year also local calls for Myanmar that make it possible to assist the local civil society in a more targeted way and develop greater cohesion and capacity in working on good governance related activities while strengthening the cooperation between the European Union and NGOs active in this field.
Objectives
– to strengthen the involvement of organised civil society in the shaping of local and/or national policies regarding good governance and democratic reform through:
(a) building consensus on controversial areas of policies
(b) pursuing common agendas in areas where consensus exists;
– to enhance the inclusiveness and pluralism of civil society, empower underrepresented groups for active citizenship and enhance their participation and representation in organised civil society;
Activities:
– Activities for strengthening existing civil society platforms, networks and coalitions, including building of information sharing mechanisms
– Joint activities with public institutions and parliamentary bodies
– Activities for the institutionalisation of consultation mechanisms between civil society and national or local public institutions as well as the international donor community
– Collection of data and research-based advocacy
– Legal support services
– Advocacy campaigns
– Awareness raising and public communication activities
– Cultural activities and events
– Conflict resolution and mediation activities
– Meetings, seminars and round table dialogues
– Training and curricula development provided that it complies with the specific objectives of the call for proposals
