Open Society Foundation and The Global Faculty Grants Program (GFGP) are pleased to offers professional development and research support to faculty in the social sciences and humanities in select countries of the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Nepal to visit Western universities.
Global Faculty Grants Program offers-
- The Research/Publication awards- The program aims to promote original research within the social sciences and humanities and to increase the international mobility of scholars in countries of focus. The program supports well-established scholars who occupy responsible and influential positions at home universities to pursue research visits of up to 5 months to any accredited higher education institution worldwide.
Eligibility for Research/Publication awards-
- These awards are offered to academics in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Mongolia, Nepal, Palestine, Syria, Tajikistan, and Tunisia. The Program does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or disability, and is offered to well-established scholars with the following profile–
- holding a doctorate (PhD) or its equivalent
- occupying a full-time position at a university with regular teaching responsibilities
- demonstrating language ability sufficient for the desired university placement
- having an established record of academic achievements, including publications in area of specialization within the social sciences and humanities
- able to propose a persuasive and well-planned research project to be completed during the fellowship
- be able to secure an invitation letter from hosting university scholar
Research Proposals-
Applicants are required to submit a project proposal (no more than 10 pages), which should focus on a specific research question in the social sciences/humanities. The proposal should include a well-defined research hypothesis and should explain how the study will contribute to the academic discipline both in local and international contexts. Applicants must also justify the choice of hosting environment and proposed duration of support (up to 5 months). The proposal should include an annotated time-line for plans to complete and publish the research article, even if that timeline might extend beyond the duration of the grant.
- Academic Sabbatical grants-The program aims to raise the quality of higher education instruction within the social sciences and humanities in targeted countries by encouraging grantees to develop innovative approaches to curriculum design and teaching and strengthen their access to international academic networks.
Fellows are encouraged to improve their research methodology, using resources unavailable at home and collaborating with international colleagues on research projects. Particular emphasis is placed on the intersection of teaching and research: grantees are encouraged to incorporate their research into their teaching, thereby enriching the learning experience of their students.
Eligibility-
- Sabbatical awards are offered to academics in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, and Tajikistan
- Professional position: Applicants should be junior or mid-career academics, clearly dedicated to a career in higher education, whose professional trajectory has not peaked but whose position allows them to implement curricular changes in the classroom
- Full-time teaching equivalency- Applicants ideally hold a full-time teaching position at a reform-minded department in a strong public or private institution; that is, in departments ready and willing to support the innovations of returning grantees. Depending on the local higher education environment, applicants may hold part-time appointments at multiple institutions, as long as the majority of their time is devoted to teaching and research;
- Applicants should have substantive teaching experience in their area of academic expertise within the social sciences and humanities
- Applicants should hold (or be in the final stages of completing) a Doctoral degree. The selection committee will, however, consider applicants holding a Master’s degree, provided they currently have significant teaching responsibilities, are committed to a career within academia, and can demonstrate that the fellowship will improve their research, teaching, and international networks.
