The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem is inviting applications for 2012 Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) Summer Programs for Scholars and Secondary School Educators. These intensive post-graduate level academic programs have been designed to provide opportunities to foreign secondary school teachers and scholars to enhance their knowledge about American society, culture and institutions. These programs involve many study tours and aim to improve quality of education about US in academic institutions based outside US.

SUSI Summer Program aims to strengthen curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions overseas. Foreign university faculty, secondary educators and other scholars spend approximately four weeks at host universities where they take part in a series of lectures, seminar discussions and site visits related to each institute’s theme. Participants spend the remaining two weeks on a study tour, which complements the academic program and includes visits to sites of interest in another geographic region of the country.
Eligibility Conditions
– SUSI programs are extremely competitive. As a result, all institute programs require excellent proficiency in English and outstanding qualifications.
– Applicants should be mid-career, between the ages of 30-50.
– Applicants must have Palestinian residency identification.
– Individuals holding permanent residence status in the United States (including U.S. citizens and green card holders) are not eligible.
2012 Program Descriptions
– SUSI programs for Secondary School Educators (two programs)
The two institute programs are an opportunity for secondary school teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, and other educational professionals to attend a six-week post-graduate seminar in the United States.
– SUSI programs for University-Level and Faculty members
The six summer institute programs are intensive six-week post-graduate level academic programs with integrated study tours whose purpose is to provide foreign university faculty and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of American society, culture and institutions. The ultimate goal is to strengthen curricula and to improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad.
The topics of the six programs are:
-> American Politics and Political Thought – University of Massachusetts, Amherst
-> Contemporary American Literature – University of Louisville
-> Journalism and Media – Ohio University
-> Religious Pluralism in the United States – University of California at Santa Barbara
-> U.S. Culture and Society – New York University
-> U.S. Foreign Policy – University of Florida
