The Zakheni Arts Therapy Foundation is an NGO that works with diverse South African communities and uses creative arts therapies, storytelling and play as a medium for bringing growth in these communities. FireMaker Project is a capacity building training program designed by the foundation for the care workers willing to serve the communities in South Africa. With the help of Firemaker Project, the foundation aims to address the emotional impact of HIV and Aids on children and communities.
Zakheni Foundation is currently inviting applications for the FireMaker Project, a three-day workshop designed to deepen the capacity of Organizations in their services to vulnerable children.
Use of Creative Arts in Firemaker Project
Creative arts as conceived in the Firemaker Project include the creation of art objects (pictures, sculptures, etc.), the development of dramatic pieces (such as plays and puppet shows) as well as the use of other forms of play. The project requires a transfer of skills from the traditional pool of practitioners using creative arts therapies to a larger pool of community care workers. This is not a simple undertaking for several reasons.
– The creative arts therapies comprise a broad and extremely varied range of therapeutic techniques, not all are appropriate to the target population.
– Creative arts therapists have extensive training in psychology and/or social work and thus have a rich knowledge base on which to draw.
– It is important to select techniques which are sufficiently sophisticated to have a significant therapeutic benefit, but safe enough to minimize the possibility of harm.
– It was necessary to develop models of training, ongoing development, support, mentoring and supervision that would enable care workers using creative arts techniques to continue to develop in a healthy manner.
About the Workshop
