International Climate Initiative Annual Grant of EUR120 Million in Climate Change and Biodiversity

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is accepting grant applications from German implementing organizations, governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, commercial enterprises, higher education institutions, research institutes, and international and multilateral institutions for projects on climate change and biodiversity.
Annual budget of IKI on the sectors of climate change and biodiversity is EUR120 Million. The grant applications to promote sustainable development in the partner countries are encouraged. The grant application must demonstrate the efficiency of the expenditures and costs and the economical use of the funds.
Project Areas: Considering the needs of partner countries, IKI supports projects on following four areas-
- Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions – sustainable energy supply, climate-friendly transportation, low-carbon industrial processes, and the future design of the carbon market.
- Development of Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs)
- Systems for Monitoring, Reporting and Verifying Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation Actions (MRV)
- Mobilizing Private Capital for Climate Protection Measures
- Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change
- Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA)
- Climate-related Risk Management Instruments – Innovative Solutions for Insuring Against Weather Risks
- Development and Implementation of National Adaption Strategies
- Monitoring and Reporting on Adaptation
- Conserving Natural Carbon Sinks with a Focus on REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation)
- Implementation of National REDD+ Strategies – Keeping Forests Intact for Climate Change Mitigation
- Ecological and Social Standards and Additional Benefits of Carbon Sequestration
- Restoring Forest Landscape and Storing Carbon
- Monitoring, Reporting and Verifying REDD+
- Conserving Biological Diversity (CBD)
- Measures related to the CBD Program of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) and Cooperation with Local and Indigenous Communities in order to Conserve and Restore Ecosystem
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must demonstrate project-related expertise and experience of the target region.
- Applicants must have continuously implemented international cooperation projects for at least three years jointly with the partners in the region, or they must have been successfully involved in project-related activities for at least three years. Applicants must submit documents supporting the claim.
- Proposed projects must focus on the needs of target countries, analyzing gaps and targeting to advance the countries’ specific climate protection efforts in the best possible ways.
- The project will be selected for grant only if the governments of the partner countries demonstrate explicit interest in the project.
- There can be more than one implementing partner organization/institution.
