Asian International Justice Initiative (AIJI) – a collaboration between the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley and the East-West Center, Honolulu invites lawyers and human rights professionals from ASEAN countries to join AIJI’s Khmer Rouge Tribunal (KRT) Monitoring and Community Outreach Program, a project run in close cooperation with international and Cambodian non-governmental organizations working on post-conflict and victims’ rights issues related to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
AIJI has been conducting research, training and educational initiatives in human rights and post-conflict justice for over seven years. Lawyers, academics and human rights professionals interested in post-conflict justice, human rights and international humanitarian law are best placed to apply.
The program successfully completed its coverage of the first trial at the ECCC in November 2009. The team (comprising lawyers and human rights advocates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, the Philippines, U.S.A., Germany and Switzerland) wrote weekly reports and together with local film production company Khmer Mekong Films, produced a weekly television show on the trial, which Time Magazine described as a “sleeper hit.”
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in monitoring and community outreach for a case dealing with one of the 20th century’s most notorious mass atrocities. It provides an excellent entry point for lawyers interested in gaining experience in the field of international criminal law or human rights, as a precursor to a career with United Nations agencies or to complement already existing experience at the UN prior to working with international NGOs. Additionally, researchers interested in international justice processes are welcome assets to the Team.
