The online sphere these days has been a great driving force behind many effective organizing practices and movements that lead to social change and women especially the young ones are not far behind in making conversations and discussions engaging from a feminist perspective.
Looking at the interest of young women in such movements in recent times, The Young Feminist Wire has been organizing E-learning sessions with the aim to explore:
– Concepts of women’s movements and movement building
– Characteristics of women’s movements
– How women’s movements affect change with examples from different regions
– The concept and practice of leadership in the context of movement building
– Two key trends impacting women’s movements around the world: the rise of religious fundamentalisms; and resource mobilization for women’s organizing
The Young Feminist Wire is now accepting registrations for the THIRD e-learning session of the Interrogating Movements series on:
Session 3: Religious Fundamentalisms and Women’s Rights
- Facilitators: Shareen Gokal and Saira Zuberi (Challenging and Resisting Religious Fundamentalisms Team)
Religious fundamentalisms are an example of growing movements that negatively impact women’s rights across regions and religions. This session will discuss religious fundamentalisms and women’s rights, including the terminology and concepts used, possible factors for the rise in religious fundamentalisms, the impacts religious fundamentalisms have on women’s rights, how religious fundamentalist agendas work, and some examples of strategies activists use to counter these forces. Participants will be asked to reflect on the following questions: What is the experience of religious fundamentalisms in your context or area of work? Does age or generation make a difference in the way women experience religious fundamentalisms, or the way women’s rights activists respond to religious fundamentalisms? How do religious fundamentalists seek to engage or recruit youth in your context, or are there youth actively challenging fundamentalist ideologies? As women’s rights activists, what do we need to do to build stronger movements and counter regressive ideologies?
Deadline for Registration is July 22, 2011
