The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, Germany is seeking application for short-term fellowships for visiting researchers in 2012. The fellowship program of the institute aims to support research on textbooks and educational media and provide an opportunity to academic authors to conduct comparative studies, discuss their findings, as well as use the extensive collection of international textbook in the library of the institute.
The fellowships are granted in particular for:
– research motivated by the desire to promote understanding among nations through education. This research is aimed at identifying prejudices, distortions, stereotyped and adversary images as well as their origins by means of analysing educational materials;
– international educational research as well as didactical research on teaching methods, contents and objectives in the subject areas in which the Institute’s library specializes; research in the field of basic governmental, institutional and social requirements concerning teaching;
– academic research on problems of perception and reception in the fields of history, geography and social sciences;
– studies carried out from the perspective of textbook development in the subjects represented at the Institute, which aim at paving the way for own textbook production through comparative international textbook research.
Amount and Duration of the Fellowship
The monthly fellowship is € 1,000. Usually, fellowships are granted for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. During the stay at the Institute, accommodation can be rented at the Institute’s guest house at a monthly rate of € 240. All rooms are non-smoking rooms. The Georg Eckert Institute will not automatically reimburse travel expenses. Nevertheless, a travel allowance may be applied for and provided to persons in need and according to the funds available. The allowance amounts to a maximum of 50 % of the travel expenses, but does not exceed € 500. In principle, health insurance has to be organized by the fellowship holder.
Who Should Apply?
Applications are invited from academics, individuals involved in the production of textbooks (design, writing, editing, etc.), employees of educational publishers, and other individuals who influence the development of curricula and textbooks. Research projects should be relevant to the collection in the GEI’s specialist library.
Requirements
– Persons applying for a fellowship should have graduated from a university or attained a comparable qualification in the field of education. Applications are welcomed from persons who are involved in the writing of textbooks or are employed with textbook publishers, as well as persons whose didactical activities concern curricula and textbooks.
– The fellowship must be conducive to the Institute’s own work or projects in the field of international textbook research. Some fellowships are reserved for individuals who conduct projects affiliated with the Institute.
– The Institute may occasionally offer fellowships on a competitive basis, advertising specific topics.
