Deadline: 1 November 2015
The NASA Postdoctoral Program is inviting applicants for its Postdoctoral Program consisting of two components:
- The NASA Postdoctoral Research Program and
- The NASA Postdoctoral Management Program.
The NASA Postdoctoral Management Program is an adjunct to the NASA Postdoctoral Research Program and is designed to provide valuable research management experience for some of the research program Fellows. Together, the two components will be operated to provide some of the most talented new and senior Ph.D.s with opportunities to participate in NASA mission-related activities as guests at NASA Centers, Headquarters, and other NASA-approved sites.
Fellowship Details (Stipend Rates)
- Postdoctoral Fellow: A Postdoctoral Fellow has held the doctoral degree for less than five years at the time of application. Stipend rates for Postdoctoral Fellows start at $53,500 per year. Supplements are provided for high cost of living areas and certain academic specialties.
- Senior Postdoctoral Fellow: A Senior Postdoctoral Fellow has held the doctoral degree for five or more years at the time of application. The stipend amount for a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow is based on the location of the appointment, experience (number of years beyond the doctoral degree), and career achievement (academic rank and professional title).
Eligibility /Selection Criteria
- Applicant must have completed the requirements for a Ph.D. or an equivalent doctorate degree before beginning the fellowship.
- Must have U.S. citizenship, Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status, or the Exchange Visitor J-1 Visa (research scholar only) before beginning the fellowship. An H-1B status is not acceptable because the NPP is not an employment program. They are eligible to apply for the NPP while holding the F-1 status. However, if applicant are selected for an appointment, must change your status to one listed above.
- Each NPP Fellowship is tied to a specific research opportunity located at a NASA Center. If applicant apply and are selected for an NPP award, then must relocate to the Center that announced the opportunity to which applicant applied. In the case of virtual Centers such as the NASA Astrobiology Institute, applicant must relocate to the university location of an advisor listed on the research opportunity. Establishing and maintaining residency at the Center or at the location of the advisor is required to begin the appointment and to remain in the program.
- NPP Fellows are eligible for another award five years after the end of the previous appointment.
- Some NASA Centers may require a security or visitation clearance before applicant starts appointment. Applicant will be notified in advance by the NPP Center Representative if a clearance is required.
- Applicant cannot start your NPP appointment until all prior appointment requirements are met, including completing and returning required forms to ORAU. ORAU will not issue an advance stipend check, start stipend payments, or approve relocation travel until all requirements are met.
- Scientific merit of proposed research (40%)
- References (20%)
- Academic and research record (20%)
- Laboratory/Center review (20%)
Note: Priority for selection will be given to applicants whose proposed research is particularly interdisciplinary and/or innovative. Research involving two or more NAI teams will also be given priority for selection, as will research that broadens the activities of the NASA Astrobiology Program team(s) involved. Proposals for research that incrementally extend an ongoing team project will be given lower selection priority.
