Call for Applications: The Global Drug Policy Advocacy Fellowship Program for Asia & Africa

The Global Drug Policy Program under Open Society Foundations (OSF) invites applications to the 2016 Asia & Africa Advocacy Fellowship Program on Drug Policy Reform.

This program supports those working in sectors related to drug policy in order to increase their understanding of international drug policy reform issues, improve their advocacy skills, and enhance their capacity in working with the media on drug policy. The fellowship seeks to increase the capacity of emerging and new leaders in drug policy reform, including people not necessarily working full-time on drug-related issues.

Objectives

The objectives of the fellowship include the following:

  • increase their knowledge of global drug policy reform issues on a region-by-region approach
  • increase their understanding of the international drug control system and conflicts with other United Nations priorities
  • have a greater awareness of the drug policy reform landscape and key figures within that movement
  • establish links with those working in drug policy, particularly in the UK
  • build and develop their communications skills, including for media interviews, press releases, press databases, public speaking
  • have an understanding of the tools for debate, so that they can confidently challenge anti-reform positions
  • improve their confidence as drug policy advocates both through participation in the program and through ongoing support from the host organization

Priority Areas

The program includes the following topics:

  • global overview of drug policy reform
  • overarching issues relevant to drug policy reform
  • international drug control system
  • overview of international human rights in the context of drug policy
  • drug policy developments in Africa
  • effective campaigning
  • media and public engagement

Eligibility Criteria

  • Successful candidates will have a track-record of public engagement in the issues of drug policy reform or other relevant field (e.g., public health) at the local, national, or international levels.
  • Applications are welcome from those working across numerous fields related to drug policy. Previous fellows have worked in drug policy NGOs, at law enforcement agencies, in national governments, in health care facilities, and at universities, among other organizations. Please note that before receiving the fellowship, finalists will be asked to present a letter from their employer agreeing to their two-week participation in the course.
  • The purpose of this program is to promote the capacities of both new advocates and individuals who are emerging leaders in drug policy reform. Starting in 2016, employees of organizations currently receiving support from the Open Society Foundations are eligible to apply for the fellowship.

How to Apply

To be considered for the program, applicants should submit the following documents in English as .doc or .pdf attachments, together via email:

  • Application: Download and complete the application form. Note that the applicant is asked to address all prompts, including providing short-answer responses to four questions.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): The CV should specify the applicant’s academic and professional background, including a detailed description of previous employment, a list of academic and policy projects in which the applicant has been involved, public engagement record, and honors (including scholarships and fellowships).
  • Writing sample (optional): The sample must be in English and should demonstrate the candidate’s expertise in a field related to drug policy. The writing sample should not exceed two pages.

Call for Applications: AP-NORC Journalism Fellowship on the Economics Of Aging And Work

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, in partnership with The Associated Press Media Editors (APME) and with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation currently invites applications for its Journalism Fellowship on the Economics Of Aging And Work.

This fellowship program is designed to address the need for more journalists with the skills required to do research-based enterprise reporting.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants:

  • Must be a journalist with at least five years of experience. Journalists working in text, radio, television, and online are eligible to apply.
  • Must demonstrate interest in reporting on issues of the aging population, with some experience reporting on business and economics.
  • Should have a track record that demonstrates ability to translate economic and academic research into journalism. Formal training or experience in economics or social science research methods would be beneficial, but is not required.
  • Should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must be willing to relocate to Chicago. Consideration may be given to a highly qualified fellow who wishes to work in Washington, DC, instead of Chicago.

The Uncovering Asia Programme currently invites applications from the journalists from across Asia and around the world for the fellowships to travel to and attend its Second Asian Investigative Journalism Conference, in Kathmandu, Nepal (September 23-25, 2016).

The three day conference brings together an extraordinary group of top investigative reporters, data journalists, and media law and security experts.

The conferences, held every two years, are well-known for focusing on hands-on, practical skills and training.

Eligibility Criteria

  • More than 30 fellowships are available both for established and young promising journalists with at least three years of experience who are eager to learn state-of-the-art methods and techniques and help us spread investigative journalism around the world.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated experience in investigative or data journalism.
  • Ten fellowships are reserved for data journalists. Another five fellowships are available for those engaged in cutting-edge investigative techniques and production; This includes use of 360 video, drones, sensors, and multimedia.
  • As part of the fellowship, after the Uncovering Asia Conference, grantees are expected to produce a story or give a presentation about the conference in their home countries to help spread investigative journalism worldwide.
  • Applicants must be able to communicate in and understand English, as this will be the main language of the conference.

Call for Applications: Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships 2016

The European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS) is currently inviting applications for its Toshiba International Foundation Fellowships, conducted jointly by EAJS and the Toshiba International Foundation for candidates to undertake research in Japan.

Applications are invited for Toshiba International Foundation scholarships for a three-month stay in Japan to be completed by the end of March 2017.

Grant Information

Grantees of the Toshiba International Foundation Fellowship program can expect a fellowship of not more than 7000 EUR.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be doctoral students, and they should be specializing in any field in Japanese Studies at a European institution.
  • Applications by Japanese High School graduates will not be considered.

How to Apply

Applications should include:

  • A curriculum vitae and a brief statement (not more than 300 words) describing the project for which the applicant wishes to pursue their research in Japan. These two documents are to be submitted by the applicant via the online application system.
  • A letter of support from the student’s supervisor or advisor must be sent to the EAJS office separately by the advisor on the student’s behalf. It must be printed on university letterhead and display the advisor’s signature. The letter may be sent by post or in PDF format by email.

International Women’s Media Foundation: African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is currently inviting applications from women journalists from across the globe for its African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative.

This program is funded $ 5 million by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and is designed to support journalists interested in pursuing stories that go beyond the well-established path of political instability, armed conflicts, and humanitarian crisis in the region.

Over the next four years, the IWMF will continue to lead groups of women journalists to the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, and provide training and support for in-country journalists. These efforts include essential security training to help journalists stay safe in the field.

As part of its African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, the IWMF will lead eight trips to the region over the course of 2016.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Women journalists of all nationalities are welcome to apply.
  • Applicant must be a woman journalist.
  • Applicant must have at least 3 years professional experience in journalism. Journalists working in print, broadcast, or digital media, including freelancers, are eligible.
  • Non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate support from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.

  • Applicant may not submit one application for multiple countries or trips. She must submit a complete application and story plan for each country for which she wants to apply.
  • Applications include basic details, a statement of interest including a researched story pitch, CV, work samples, and either a letter of support from an editor or a proven track record of publication.

America Solidaria US is currently accepting applications from volunteers across US for its year-long Fellowship Program in 13 countries throughout the Americas. Projects are focused in the areas of health, education, and economic development to benefit children, youth, and families living in poverty.

The Watson University is currently accepting applications from next generation Social Entrepreneurs from across the world for its Fall 2016 semester program or degree track.

Watson provides a 15 week incubator like experience in which selected candidates complete short master courses from the world’s foremost leaders, entrepreneurs, and thinkers including a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people and more; intensive mentorship; and training in the entrepreneurial skills of empathy, creativity, resilience, grit, bootstrapping, team building and fundraising. Watson helps next generation social entrepreneurs develop and advance solutions to the toughest challenges facing the world.

There are four further full ride fellowships available for scholars to apply to:

  1. The Enlight China Fellowship: A full ride scholarship to one promising next generation social entrepreneur from greater China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan).
  2. The Enlight Women Fellowship: A full ride scholarship to one promising next generation social entrepreneur working to increase access and quality of education for women and girls around the world.
  3. The Luff Peace Fellowship: A full ride scholarship to one promising next generation social entrepreneur working to promote and usher in peace around the world.
  4. The Middle East Fellowship: A full ride scholarship to one promising next generation social entrepreneur from the Middle East.

Eligibility Criteria

  • is 18-23 years old
  • has a clear idea for positive social change with a track record that demonstrates the viability of the idea.
  • has a deep seated passion for solving the problem they are addressing.
  • is coachable – embraces honest feedback and desires to improve.

Each BHSI Fellow will:

  • Receive $10,000 in financial support toward his or her work.

Call for Applications: Central Asia-Azerbaijan Fellowship Program 2016

The George Washington University – Elliott School of International Affairs’ Central Asia Program (CAP) is currently inviting applications from the young professionals for its Central Asia-Azerbaijan Fellowship Program (CAAFP) Fall 2016.

The fellowship program seeks to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and to build lasting intellectual networks among Central Asian, Azerbaijani, and U.S scholarly and policy communities.

CAAFP fellows will spend five months in residence at GW, where they will participate in tailor-made programs and be introduced to U.S. policy and expert communities in both Washington, DC and New York. Fellows are required to attend seminars, workshops and training sessions, to write one policy brief on a predetermined theme, and to present their research at two public seminars. Throughout their fellowship, fellows will be mentored by program faculty affiliates.

The theme for the Fall 2016 session is “Economies and Societies in Central Asia and Azerbaijan”.

Benefits

Three Fellows will be selected for Fall 2016. Fellows will be awarded a monthly stipend of $3,000 (subject to taxes). Travel to and from Central Asia to Washington, DC, as well as visa and health insurance costs, will also be covered.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be between 25 and 40 years of age.
  • Applicant must be a citizen of any of the following six countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan and currently reside in one of the six countries.
  • Background in government, policy, academia, human rights, or democracy.
  • Academic candidates must possess a Master’s degree and have experience in policy-oriented activities. For non-academics an equivalent degree of professional achievement is expected.
  • Applicant must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

  • Explain why this particular challenge(s) is among the most important for Central Asia or Azerbaijan.
  • Analyze what has been done to deal with these challenges.
