If you are seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges, you are an appropriate candidate to receive the Open Society Fellowship. The selected fellows will get an opportunity to join the rich and diverse Foundations community, a global network of activists and institutions dedicated to defending civil society and improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable citizens.
Most fellows will spend a portion of their fellowship term at one of the organization’s main offices, in New York, Washington, London, Brussels, or Budapest, or at a regional foundation. The fellows will have to organize and participate in conferences and program events, they will have to run seminars. This is an opportunity to grow without any limitations.

Fellowship duration is usually one year but application requests for shorter or longer terms are also considered. Full-time fellows will receive a stipend of $80,000 or $100,000 depending on work experience, seniority and current income. In addition to the stipend, fellows will receive a project budget. That budget may include expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance.

Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be proficient in English language.
- Fellows who wish to work on their project in a country in which they do not have citizenship must satisfy and comply with applicable visa requirements.
- Projects that include lobbying activities will not be funded.
- The fellowship does not fund enrollment for degree or non-degree study at academic institutions, including dissertation research.

- Read the Fellowship guidelines carefully and if you find yourself eligible, begin with the application. You must create an account and continue with the application process.
- Once you click ‘create account and continue’, you will be directed to a page where you will fill the details of your project. This is the application form that demands you to describe the purpose and focus of your project, preferred fellowship start date, current annual salary in US Dollars, complete contact details of three references, and the fellowship details. You will also have to submit a detailed resume or curriculum vitae emphasizing relevant professional experience, executive summary, project proposal, relevant work samples and/or supporting materials and finally certify that the application is complete and accurate.
- You can complete and submit this application in one sitting or save the draft after completing some portion of it and log in any other time to complete and submit.
- Upon submission, applicants receive an ID number that can be found in the “Submissions” section of the portal. The ID number should be quoted in any correspondence.
Note: Proposal and other materials can be submitted in language other than English but certified translations must be provided along with them. Applicants without Internet access may send an application by post downloading the PDF application form.
