The University of Melbourne’s Department of Resource Management and Geography is seeking applications for Research Fellow (Social Dimensions of Climate Change Adaptation) at the Melbourne School of Land and Environment, Parkville campus. The position is part-time on a fixed term basis.
About Research Fellowship
This research fellowship position is open for a social scientist to conduct research and research management tasks associated with a project investigating ‘The Legal, Institutional and Cultural Barriers to Adaptation to Sea-Level Rise in Australia’. The project aims to understand how legal, institutional, and cultural factors impede or facilitate adaptation to sea-level rise in Australia. The empirical work for the project will take place in the Eurobodalla region of NSW, and the Westernport Bay region in Victoria.
Responsibilities
The primary role of the position is research. The successful applicant will be required to: conduct data collection and analysis, involving extended periods of fieldwork in the Eurobodalla and Westernport regions; monitor and synthesize Australian and relevant international research on barriers to adaptation to climate change; assist with project management, including liaison with project partners; prepare reports on the progress of the project; and prepare peer-reviewed academic publications informed by the research project.
The position entails no obligation to coordinate or teach undergraduate or postgraduate subjects, although participation in the supervision of honors research students may be possible.
Eligibility
For appointment to Research Fellow Grade 1 (Level A)
- A postgraduate degree in a relevant social science, such as anthropology, economics, law, human geography, planning, political science, or sociology
- A demonstrated ability to conduct research using methods of social science
- An understanding of the social and/or institutional aspects of environmental change
- Results of research which may have been published
- The capacity to develop effective relationships with stakeholders
- A demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
- High level organizational and administrative skills and strong inter-personal skills
- High level communication skills, both oral and written
- A demonstrated ability to work under broad guidance from senior academic staff
In addition to the above, essential criteria for appointment to Research Fellow Grade 2 (Level B) are:
- A PhD, or near completion of a PhD, in a relevant social science, such as anthropology, economics, law, human geography, planning, political science, or sociology
- An excellent understanding of the social and/or institutional aspects of environmental change Demonstrated evidence of independent research
- Experience in research which has resulted in refereed journals and books
- A demonstrated capacity for interdisciplinary research
- Demonstrated ability to work under minimum supervision
Salary
$56,226 – $76,229 p.a. (pro rata if applicable) Research Fellow 1 (Level A) or
$80,318 – $95,375 p.a. (pro rata if applicable) Research Fellow 2 (Level B)
plus 9% superannuation
