The news about the tool for NGOs to adapt to and assess climate change risks has been circulating lately around the world. As attention for addressing climate change increases and more and more NGOs are expected to get involved, this tool can be very handy to understand climate change, environmental degradation and global warming and what steps they can take to assess the risks involved and how they and their communities can adapt to this change. The tool has been developed by Tearfund as “an environmental tool for agencies in developing countries” through CEDRA (Climate change and environmental Degradation Risk and Adaptation assessment).
The tool comprises of practical exercises which can be applied by organizations. It uses an imaginary project called “The Somuni Women’s Rehabilitation Programme” to relate the experiences and help us better understand the situation. Through simple framework, it helps us identify environmental hazards, prioritize hazards to address, select different adaptation options, address unmanageable risks, consider new projects and locations and continual review. There are checklists, assessment forms, case studies and other resources that can effectively aid NGOs in the process of planning and implementing projects to address problems related to climate change.
The tool can be downloaded from this link.
