The Birdlife International (BI) is accepting letters of inquiry from non-governmental organizations, community groups, private enterprises, universities and other civil society for the CEPF (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund) investment in the Eastern Afromontane Biodiversity hotspot. Grants will be provided to activities that contribute to CEPF Strategic Direction 2, Investment Priority 2.2.
Grant funding provided for projects under this call will be maximum USD 10,000. Organizations that propose to build capacity of local civil society and community groups are strongly encouraged to apply for the grant.
CPEF Strategic Direction 2 : To improve the protection and management of the network of KBAs (Key Biodiversity Areas/high conservation value areas) throughout the hotspot.
CPEF Investment Priority 2.2: Projects that will support the role of civil society organizations in the application of site safeguard policies and procedures in order to avoid or minimize/mitigate ongoing and emerging threats on critical biodiversity habitats posed by development goals.
These safeguard policies and procedures include (among others):
- The strengthening of environmental impact assessment implementation;
- Application of the World Bank policy on natural habitats;
- Application of the Equator Principles;
- International Finance Corp Standards;
- Certification and Accreditation Schemes.
Also, interventions of CSOs such advocacy and technical input to environmental impact assessments, review of such assessments, support for consultations with local stakeholders, the building of alliances across different interest groups, and the development of economic alternatives will be supported.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants can be non-governmental organizations, community groups, private enterprises, universities and other civil society.
- Government owned enterprises or institutions can apply for fund if they can demonstrate that the enterprise or institution:
- has a legal personality independent of any government agency or actor
- has the authority to apply for and receive private funds
- may not assert a claim of sovereign immunity
- Applications can be made for projects in one of the following countries – Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
- Applicant organizations must have their own bank account and be authorized under relevant national laws to receive charitable contributions.
- Applications must be made for the above mentioned CPEF Strategic direction and investment priority.
- Letter of Inquiry can be submitted in English, French or Portuguese using the forms available on Application guidance electronically.
