The Royal Society and DFID Africa are jointly inviting scientists who want to develop collaborative research consortia between scientists in sub-Saharan Africa and a research institute in the United Kingdom. The major aim of the program is to strengthen the research capacity of universities and research institution in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting the development of sustainable research networks. Regional co-operations are highly encouraged.

The Program grant provides up to £1,243,000 support over a five year period. The research consortia should undertake research as well as provide research training in African laboratories during the period. The fund provided is towards research expenses, travel and subsistence costs, (PhD) training, and limited funds for equipments.
Eligibility Criteria –
- All the African countries except for Western Sahara, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt; are eligible to participate in the funding program.
- Applicants must be based in one of the eligible Sub-Saharan African Countries or the United Kingdom.
- The Research Consortia must consist of three African Groups and one UK-based laboratory.
- Principal Investigator must have a PhD or have extensive research experience at an equivalent level.
- Principal Investigator must have a proven track record of training students at Master’s and Doctoral level.
- Principal Investigator must have a proven track record of publishing in both national and international journals.
- Principal Investigator must be based in the respective countries at the time of the application.
- Applicants do not need to have held a Scientific Networking award to apply for a Program Grant.
