The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) accepts grant applications for its different kinds of grant programs. The foundation seeks to fund frontline programmes that help to alleviate the pain – whether physical, emotional or financial – of those living with, affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS, and to continue the fight against this worldwide pandemic so that no one is left behind.
Up till now, the Foundation has supported 1,359 projects with total grant award £80 million.

Types of Grants
The Grants are awarded in two categories:
- Category A
- Pioneer Grants
- Flagship Programmes
- Category B
- Support Grants
- Robert Key Memorial Fund
Pioneer Grants
The pioneer grants seeks to support a specific initiative focusing on an individual key population at higher risk – such as men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers and injecting drug users – within an individual country.
Pioneer Grants can be multi-year, and do not have a prescribed award amount.
Eligible Countries for Pioneer Grants
Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Myanmar (Burma), Nigeria, Russian Federation, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Eligibility Criteria for Pioneer Grants
- They must operate within one of our programme countries.
- They must be able to track changes such as access to condoms, HIV testing and treatment of programme beneficiaries.
- The applicants must demonstrate the following features-
- They must have a focus on service delivery
- They must be catalytic in nature
- They must be scalable in design
- They must be innovative
The foundation will accept Pioneer Grant Concept Notes in early 2015. Notification will be out soon.
Flagship Programs
A Flagship Programme targets a specific vulnerable group through a number of related initiatives within an individual country. Such programmes will look to genuinely ‘close a gap’ for a specific vulnerable group by engaging in a number of activities ranging from service delivery to advocacy.
One can apply for Flagship Programme applications by invitation only.
Support Grants
These are grants which drive momentum towards an AIDS free future because they have the potential to have an impact on large numbers of people.
Support Grants is targeted at groups within the general population who we have long been invested in, namely vulnerable girls, women and children.
Eligibility Criteria for Support Grants
EJAF funds support organisations that
- must be aligned with the UNAIDS elimination agenda (Getting to Zero) and/or the UNAIDS Global Plan
- must allow for a unique EJAF contribution
- must already be working at scale
Applicants can apply for the Support Grants by invitation only.
Robert Key Memorial Fund
These funds are open to organisations that can demonstrate an immediate, tangible benefit for individuals living with HIV. Applications will be considered per year on a rolling basis and may be for single or multi-year programmes.
Grant award– Up to £10,000 per year
Eligible Countries for Robert Key Memorial Fund
For Robert Key Memorial fund, the proposed project can be located in any of the following countries in addition to the above mentioned countries – Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Mozambique, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Eligibility Criteria for Robert Key Memorial Fund
- Applicant must be a registered not-for-profit or charitable organization. Individuals are not eligible to apply for the grant.
- For Robert Key Memorial fund, the proposed project can be located in any of the above mentioned countries.
The applications for these funds are open throughout the year and all 25 countries are eligible to apply for the funds.
