The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation opens two types of grand challenges on regular basis. The grand challenges are open for organizations around the world to foster scientific and technological innovation to solve key health problems in the developing world.
Challenges
- Grand Challenges in Global Health Opportunities
- Grand Challenges Explorations Opportunities
Both initiatives focus on encouraging innovation in global health and development research, although the Grand Challenges Explorations program targets projects that are at an earlier stage of discovery. The Explorations topics address many of the same challenges defined in the 16 Grand Challenges, in addition to new areas.
Grand Challenges in Global Health Opportunities
The Grand Challenges in Global Health is a family of grant programs focused on development in creating new tools that can radically improve health in the developing world. The program began in 2005 with the award of five-year grants totaling $458 million to scientists from 33 countries. Currently, Grand Challenges in Global Health grants target a set of 16 Grand Challenges.
The initiative covers three grand challenges
- Grand Challenges: Putting Women and Girls at the Center of Development
- Grand Challenges: Creating and Measuring Integrated Solutions for Healthy Birth, Growth, and Development
- Grand Challenges: New Interventions for Global Health
Grand Challenges Explorations Opportunities
The Grand Challenges Explorations is a grant program initiative launched by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through this challenge, the foundation funds early-stage discovery, awarding initial grants of $100,000 and potential follow-on grants of up to $1 million. Grants foster innovation in global health research targeting an expanding set of topics announced each year with the grant application procedure.
Launched in 2008, more than 1140 Grand Challenge Explorations grants have been awarded to innovative, early-stage projects in more than 60 countries.
