CIWIL invites young women (21-30), nationals and residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago to submit applications for the first Young Women’s Training Institute.
This programme will be held from 28th May to 15th June, 2012, with 2 weeks of online training held from 28th May to 8th June, 2012 and the residential component of the programme in Barbados from 10th to 15th June 2012.
The Advancing Transformational Leadership for Gender Justice in the Caribbean Training Institute is a part-online, part-residential programme, for women of the Caribbean. This highly interactive and in-depth programme seeks to equip women who are active or aspiring to political or public leadership with the necessary skills to effect transformational leadership in their societies.
This training programme seeks to develop the leadership potential within each participant, strengthening analytical skills and sound judgment, engaging in an exploration and analysis of complex issues such as:
- The Caribbean political economy, democracy and development issues.
- Caribbean feminist theorising
- Gender-responsive and ethical decision-making.
- Equitable and effective leadership approaches and dynamics.
- Partnership-building with civil society for governance accountability.
- Effective political and social communications, advocacy and activism.
The Training Institute seeks to impact the lives of participants, through enabling them to:
- Effectively influence governance through political party and electoral processes, parliamentary dynamics, constituency/stakeholder/community outreach, organization building and grassroots mobilizing
- Advocate and network to gain support for gender-sensitive policies/legislation and other issues of national and regional interest;
- Serve as transformational leaders, emanating the values and principles of equality, accountability, transparency, fairness, self-respect, mutual-respect, cooperation and non-violence.
The training is based on the active learning model that includes: lectures, case studies, role play, brainstorming, opportunities for skill practice, and site visits. Sessions are led by an expert multi-disciplinary team of trainers skilled in adult education processes and with demonstrated competences in gender analysis, political science and philosophy, political organizing; civil society organization and leadership development.
- Emerging Leaders – Government Ministers, Parliamentarians, women aspiring for political leadership, and women political actors who are working within civil society organizations on a breadth of issues related to gender justice.
- Future Leaders – Young women not yet affiliated with any organisation, but with a demonstrated interest in skills building for leadership.
On completion of the training, participants will be supported by a network of CIWIL mentors, through its regionally-based mentorship programme.
This programme engages women doing gender work in various sectors, including women involved in:
- Advocacy activities for policy change and legislative reform for the achievement of women’s rights and gender equality
- Consciousness-raising on issues of social and gender justice including: sexual and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, Violence Against Women, environmental issues, and poverty eradication
- Community mobilization
The Young Women’s Training Institute aims to contribute to the process of revitalizing a Caribbean women’s movement and connecting this participation in activism and advocacy. Participants can expect to see this initiative working to achieve the following:
- Strengthening the capacity of young female activists to assume leadership roles and participate more fully in decision making.
- Supporting young women in their personal and professional development through inter-generational mentorship
- Utilizing information communication technologies (ICTs) to strengthen networking, advocacy and support mechanisms for young women across the region
This programme is supported by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women – UN Women through a grant to the Caribbean Institute to Women in Leadership. Successful applicants will receive full sponsorship for travel, accommodation and training materials for the residential programme.
