In line with the strategic direction of the International Planned Parenthood Federations (IPPF) which is based on the importance of upholding sexual and reproductive rights, IPPF developed in collaboration and with the support of GT, a two week intensive course on implementing a rights based approach to adolescent sexual and reproductive health. More than 50 participants, young people and adults, from all parts of the world attended the course, which was held in Cambridge at the Lucy Cavendish College in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004. Result of the three year pilot of the course is a a resource pack
Who is this resource pack for?
The audience for this resource pack is two-fold. Firstly for the participants who attended the course. The second group is young and adult professionals and volunteers who work with young people on SRH issues, such as IPPF Member Association (MA) youth staff, youth outreach workers, health service providers and programme developers who are working with and for young people.
How is this resource arranged?
The Cambridge course was a two week course; this pack gives a selection of the sessions. The original course included site visits, guest lecturers and sessions on sharing experiences on programmes. This resource pack will only cover the main sessions. Appendix 1 is the compilation of the matrix as it has been developed by the participants over the three years of the pilot project. Other appendixes provide general tips for training, facilitation and organisation.
How can you use the resource pack?
This pack is for anyone who would like to train young and adult staff and volunteers in sexual and reproductive rights of young people. The sessions can be used separately or as a whole and adapted to the needs of the participants.
If possible it would be a good idea to work with a multi-disciplinary group of male/female, adult and young facilitators. This will enrich the training and provide a good example of how an adult-youth partnership works in practice.
Before running a course or workshop the team should discuss each detail and decide how to adapt the session to the local situation(or give examples of role plays, case studies and data). It is also helpful to discuss personal values and attitudes towards sexuality and young people within the team
It is strongly recommended to address the issues like sexual rights, participation, gender and diversity as a basis of the workshop. These are crucial issues which can form the basis of more programmatic issues such as education, services and advocacy.
You can only use the resource pack if you already have knowledge of sexual and reproductive rights of young people and/or experience of working in this area. The pack provides you with linkages with resource materials and background information. However it doesn’t include all the issues for discussions and presentations.
