The Open Society Foundations is currently inviting applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Director – Public Health Program based in New York, USA.

Key Job Responsibilities
The Director – Public Health Program performs the following functions-
- Leads a team currently consisting of 55 professionals, most based in New York, but with members also in Budapest and Nairobi.
- Manages a grant-making budget that in 2015 is approximately US$22,000,000, in addition to approximately US$5,500,000 for programmatic costs not related to grant-making (including technical assistance, publications, advice to governments etc.).
- Oversees the implementation of the strategy and its continuous adaptation, incorporating new evidence and developments in the field and taking advantage of emerging opportunities.
- Entails remaining up-to-date on the evidence, trends, debates, and innovations in the field, and maintaining familiarity with the individuals and organizations most active in the field, as practitioners, researchers, and policy-makers.
- Entails collaboration with colleagues and partners inside and outside the Open Society Foundations, especially with the program’s Global Health Advisory Committee, as its advisory board is called.
- Build constructive relationships with the chair and the members of this Committee.
- Provides effective supervision of senior program staff members, including attending to individual performance and professional development, and strengthening team dynamics.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- An advanced degree in a relevant field, but that can extend beyond the field of public health.
- Demonstrated mastery of the field of public health and human rights through a combination of professional experience, academic training, and familiarity with relevant literature, institutions, and leaders in the field.
- Detailed knowledge of the challenges faced by marginalized groups prioritized by the public health program, and related state of public health policy and other policies and laws affecting health in at least two countries where the Open Society Foundations are active is essential, along with curiosity about the situation in other countries and regions.
- Excellence in writing, editing.
- Fluency in English.
- Proficiency in other languages will be a great advantage as will skills as a facilitator, presenter, instructor, or discussant.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural competence is essential, as is experience working closely with socially excluded groups and civil society organizations active in the field.
- Substantial life experience in multiple cultures will be an advantage, as will demonstrated ability to build productive collaborations across fields and cultures.
- Diplomatic and problem-solving abilities as well as broad intellectual curiosity, comfort with robust debate, and a good sense of humor will also be advantageous.
- Eagerness for continued professional growth while focused on the promotion and professional development of grantees, partners in the field, and colleagues.
- Demonstrated skills as a team leader and manager.
- Experience in more than one sector (public sector, commercial sector, nonprofit sector) would be a benefit, but is not essential.
