Amnesty International (AI) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Advocate in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Senior Advocate will be responsible to lead in the development, implementation and evaluation of Amnesty International’s (AI) strategies across United Nations (UN) institutions and other intergovernmental organizations, with a focus on MENA and Europe related international advocacy strategic priorities.
The AI’s global campaign is to change the lives of those suffering human rights abuses.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Senior Advocate performs the following functions-
- Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of AI international advocacy across UN institutions, on strategic priorities as they pertain to both MENA and Europe, with a view to promoting and protecting human rights.
- Conceptualizes MENA and European international advocacy opportunities and imperatives in the UN system, developing and informing strategies for advocacy in targeted UN bodies, with a view to improving the effectiveness of the UN in promoting and protecting human rights in Europe and MENA states.
- Leads, and delivers strategies and campaigns to improve the effectiveness of UN institutions in promoting and protecting human rights in Europe and MENA states.
- Originates UN advocacy requests and generates advocacy materials on Europe and MENA priorities and issues at the UN, including through planning, framing, and writing advocacy positions, all aimed at ensuring that UN-inspired norms and standards, and UN institutions, protect and promote human rights in Europe and MENA states.
- Collates and organizes international advocacy needs from and on Europe and MENA for UN institutional advocacy.
- Delivers advocacy advice, plans, materials, and results on strategic priorities in other geographical regions as agreed from time to time.
- Provides strategic, consistent and high quality advice to IS staff and the movement on strategic and effective engagement with the UN and other IGOs;
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Deep knowledge of the EU and European states, and of MENA and MENA-states international human rights priority issues, and a keen sense of the role of multilaterally sourced norms and standards, advocacy action, diplomatic pressure, and UN accountability mechanisms, in protecting and promoting human rights in European and MENA states as well as European and MENA regional institutions.
- Deep knowledge of UN institutional processes and mandates on or related to Europe and MENA, and the working relationship between European and MENA IGOs– and the UN.
- Extensive experience of IGO advocacy.
- Knowledge of other IGOs, including those led by emerging global powers.
- Excellent knowledge of international human rights law and international humanitarian
- Excellent knowledge of international relations, in particular how this impacts on human
- Experience of supervising people and resources.
- Ability to develop project plans consistent with organizational strategies and priorities, to monitor these and evaluate outcomes.
- Ability to works cooperatively with others including with people from different backgrounds.
- Ability to train and supervise others.
- Second language skills would be an asset.
