Human Rights Watch (HRW) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Media Desk Officer in New York, United States.
The Senior Media Desk Officer reports to the Communications Director and works as part of the HRW Press Team, collaborating very closely with Digital and Multimedia staff.
HRW defends the rights of people worldwide, and scrupulously investigates abuses, expose the facts widely, and pressure those with power to respect rights and secure justice.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Senior Media Desk Officer will perform the following functions-
- Coordinate the work of the media desk and ensure that all relevant materials accompanying the online publication of Human Rights Watch research are gathered in a timely manner and are posted to the appropriate WebPages and social media channels.
- Respond to queries from journalists, editors, producers, and bookers.
- Assist Human Rights Watch Researchers and Advocates in planning and implementing media strategies.
- Proofread, format, and distribute press materials, such as news releases, dispatches and media advisories.
- Monitor media coverage.
- Assist with preparation for news conferences, meetings, and special events.
- Recruit and coordinate interns.
- Provide substantive assistance to Communications Division staff.
- Assist in building and maintaining Human Rights Watch’s global media contact database.
- Help coordinate translations; and.
- Carry out other duties as required.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international affairs, or other relevant field is required.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant work experience is required.
- Experience working in a demanding, diverse, and fast-paced media environment both independently and as a member of a team is required.
- Excellent proofreading and oral communication skills in English are required; proficiency in other languages is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including patience and a sense of humor, and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
- Experience working on a Content Management System (CMS), Drupal preferred, or publishing to a website, and proficiency in computer packages, including MS Office applications, is required.
- Strong organizational skills with close attention to detail are required.
- Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
- Flexibility to work evening hours and some weekends is required.
