We people in developing countries have always received tremendous support, resources and ideas for our sustainable development from developed countries. Now, how about we provide some support to them as a payback? Although the aid we receive from the developed world has its own issues and contentions, yet an important question is whether life in the developed world is perfect and are all developing countries trying to follow it? The ‘Design for the First World: The Rest Saving the West’ says,
“We have been focusing our energy and resources on trying to solve our Developing World problems to become more like the First World. But perhaps it is time that we, the so called Third World minds, focused our energy and creativity on solving some of the First World problems. We will have a brighter future to look forward to, and perhaps this can help us rethink and approach our current problems from a different perspective.”
As part of this unique approach, the ‘Design for the First World’ has launched a competition (Dx1W) in which it is “calling artists, designers, tinkerers, makers, and thinkers with an idea to participate. Two conditions only: you were born in and live right now in a Developing Country and you are 13 years of age or older.”
“The Dx1W competition is addressed to the developing countries of the world: All creative solutions depend on having a powerful idea. Whether it’s great resources, military, politics or government, power and size are not enough without having a powerful vision. The First World needs our ideas to solve their problems. First World problems demand Simple Third World solutions. From today on The Third World will bring ideas to redesign the future of the First World.
Individual and team submissions are welcomed.
The deadline to make submissions in this competition is 30 May 2010. For more information, visit this link.
