IFAD’s FFR 2010 Call for Proposals is open to all types of innovative ideas. It has also identified themes and topics under which projects can be proposed:
- Mobile Financial Services: Under this topic, projects can be proposed for enhancing remittances and linking rural people with financial services through the use of mobile applications. Both international as well as domestic remittances can be used innovative for reducing poverty and increasing development by innovatively using mobile telephony.
- Postal Networks: Integrating new technologies with existing post offices and/or postal savings in poor and developing countries can increase the financial access of the poor and address poverty issues.
- Microfinance Networks: Microfinance projects can also be proposed by strengthening microfinance institutions and networks in the field of money transfer of remittances in rural and underserved areas. Again, applying technology with microfinance for remittance and development can effectively address rural poverty in developing countries.
- Innovation in Financial Services: Technological innovation can be introduced for remittance senders and their families so that accessibility and usability improves. Examples in this context have been given such as “introduction of debi/cards, internet payment solutions and/or cross-selling of tailored financial products such as bill-pay or loans.
- Migrant pensions and government-to-person payments
- Housing: Innovations in cross-border mortgages, home improvement loans and related services.
- (Micro-) Insurance: Different forms of social protection services not just limited to health or life insurance to remittance senders and their families. Insurance against job loss, crop failures, repatriation etc can also be introduced.
- Migrant entrepreneurship and investment: It is important to increase the investment capacity of migrants in their homelands. Migrants’ money can be used for making investments in food security, clean technologies and typical goods for home countries.
- Securitization: Securitizing the flow of remittances
- Open thematic area: This opens up to all kinds of innovations based upon remittances.
