A week-long Human Rights workshop is being organized in Geneva from Monday, May 21, 2012 at 09:00AM to Friday, May 25, 2012 at 05:00PM. This workshop is being organized by Gmedia Center in support with respective national media networks. This workshop will be organized on the topic, “Media Empowerment on Human Rights”.
During the workshop, journalists participate in debates and discussions conducted by Human Rights experts from the Academia, UN Agencies, Media and International NGOs whose tasks include highlighting the Human Rights doctrine and monitoring mechanisms and institutions, sharing experiences and good practices and challenging the role of media as a human rights defender.
The innovative and unique approach of Gmedia Center comprises increasing media’s access to the sessions of the Human Rights Council UPR, to the significant human rights actors and materials which ensure quality coverage of human rights issues, reports and recommendations.
Gmedia Center’s workshop journalists will:
- Enhance journalists’ understanding of human rights principles, mechanisms and institutions
- Be provided with key human rights tools, references and advocacy networks
- Enhance their human rights investigating and reporting skills
- Increase the visibility and the public awareness of the Human Rights Council’s UPR sessions, discussions, reports and recommendations
- Connect with key international organizations and permanent missions
- Contribute to enhance media voice and freedom in their respective countries
- Journalists from these countries will receive priority selection: Ecuador, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.
Applicants will be reviewed and those qualified will be selected to receive grant sponsorship with the number of participants subject to availability of funding.
