Think Tank Fund (TTF) has a long history of offering paid internships and fellowships to qualified researchers. The fund now wishes to support up to ten “returnees” each year and help talented people enter the think tanks and get engaged in policy-relevant research and analysis work. The TTF in association with the Network Scholarship Programs (NSP) of the Open Society Foundations invites applications for the paid internship for MA and PhD graduates.
These internships are intended to attract recent graduates of MA and PhD programs in the social sciences and humanities to the think tanks in the selected countries from Central and Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe and former Soviet Union, giving them the opportunity to gain first-hand policy research and advocacy experience within a renowned think tank in the region. The program is designed to be beneficial both to the interns and their host organizations.
The internship allows participating think tanks to recruit young researchers from the region who recently graduated from a Western university or the Central European University in Hungary. Internships are envisioned to last up to 6 months, depending on the research topic and its scope, and will take place starting from November 2011.
Who will be the interns?
Interns will be graduates of MA and PhD programs in social sciences and humanities that were the recipients of the Open Society Fellowships from the Network Scholarship Programs or graduates of the Central European University in the last three years. Eligible applicants must be citizens of the following countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, or Ukraine.
Eligibility Criteria for Potential Interns
Eligible candidates must fulfil ALL of the following four requirements:
– Be the recipient of an Open Society fellowship from the Scholarship Programs or a graduate of the Central European University.
– Have graduated in the past three years from PhD, LLM or MA studies in social sciences and humanities.
– Be a permanent resident or citizen of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans and South Caucasus (see the detailed list at the beginning of the call).
– Have not previously received any other internship award from the network of Open Society Foundations.
– Applicants should be between 23 and 35 years of age at the time of application.
– Applicants must be fluent in written and spoken English and the language of the country where they wish to be placed.
What is expected from the internship and a hosting think tank?
Think Tank Fund expects paid interns to assume a full-time position in one of the region’s think tanks (most likely in their home country, or a country where they would like to resume their career and are able to justify this decision) up to six months. In this period, the paid intern will reside in the hosting organization’s country for the entire duration of the internship, work full-time in the hosting think tank’s offices, and will become a part of the organization. Throughout this period, the paid intern is expected to engage in ongoing policy research projects and develop concrete policy products in agreement with the hosting organization.
Last date for submitting the applications is August 31, 2011.
