The A W Mellon Foundation has provided a grant to support scholarships to graduate students who will register for full-time study for the Masters’ and Doctoral degrees in the Centre for Rhetoric Studies at the University of Cape Town.
Applications for the scholarships are invited from excellent Honors and Master’s graduates in a relevant discipline, who will register for the Master’s or Doctoral degree in the Centre for Rhetoric Studies and who will study or conduct research on the significance of rhetoric for a democratic society.
Conditions of Award:
· Applicants must have achieved a first or upper second class pass for the Honours degree. Preference will be given to applicants who have achieved the relevant degree with distinction. The selection committee may however exercise discretion with regard to applicants who do not meet these standards.
· Successful candidates will be required to register for full-time study in the Centre for Rhetoric Studies at the University of Cape Town. Awards offered will be subject to approval ofregistration in Rhetoric Studies
· Candidates who are employed full-time are ineligible to apply
· Successful candidates will be required to comply with the university’s approved policies, procedures and practices for the postgraduate sector
Value and tenure:
The value of the Doctoral Scholarship is Rs 80,000 per annum. The tenure of the scholarship is one year, although renewal for a 2nd and 3rd year will be considered. Renewals will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and on the availability of funds. Renewal of the scholarship is not guaranteed. Support to attend a conference may be available at the Director of Rhetoric Studies’ discretion.
The value of the Master’s Scholarship is Rs 48,000 per annum. The tenure of the scholarship is one year, although renewal for a 2nd year will be considered. Renewal will be contingent on satisfactory academic progress and on the availability of funds.
