Located at Christchurch, New Zealand, the University of Canterbury is one of the most prestigious universities of New Zealand. The university is currently inviting applications from students for the F A Hayek Scholarship in Economics or Political Science. This scholarship was started with the support of Alan Gibbs and is awarded for a tenure of one year. The scholarship is offered for the study of an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics or Political Science.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a scholarship, an applicant must have met the academic requirements for enrolment in the relevant thesis, dissertation, research project, creative work or performance by 10 December for those who apply by 15 October, or by 17 July for those who apply by 15 May.
The scholarship shall be awarded for study towards an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics or Political Science at the University of Canterbury.
Candidates already holding a Master’s degree cannot apply for a Master’s Scholarship.
General Conditions
The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising:
-> A nominee of the Vice-Chancellor;
-> The donor or his representative;
-> The Head of the Department of Economics;
-> The Head of the Department of Political Science;
-> The Dean of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.
In recommending the award the committee will consider the applicant’s academic ability and the potential of the applicant to make a contribution to research in Economics or Political Science. Should there be no suitable candidate in any year no award shall be made.
The scholarship is not co-tenable with either a University of Canterbury Masters’ Scholarship or a Guardian Trust Masters Scholarship in Commerce. Otherwise, the provisions of Regulation 9 of the University of Canterbury Masters’ Scholarships apply.
The general conditions for the scholarship are as for the University of Canterbury Masters’ Scholarship Regulations.
Unlike the University of Canterbury Master’s Scholarships, there is no requirement that the scholarship be held only in a ‘research year’. Thus it is for students enrolled in either coursework (Part I) or thesis (Part II) of the Master’s degree.
The value of the scholarship is $16,500. The scholar may elect to deduct their tuition fees from this amount.
The scholarships are tenable only for the period in which the student is engaged solely on a single thesis, dissertation or research project or in creative work or performance or in which such thesis, dissertation, research project, creative work or performance comprises at least 0.75 EFTS in total.
Please note that application forms are only available from approximately 8 weeks ahead of the closing date.
Last date for submitting the applications is October 15, 2011.
