Applications for Global Innovation Fund Grants up to £10 million will open in spring 2015 in full capacity. GIF welcomes applicants to propose innovative, cost-effective solutions that address any major development challenge in any country (or in multiple countries) in the developing world.
GIF seek innovations with potential to achieve significantly better results for lower cost than existing solutions. We need to clearly understand what the problem is, how it affects poor and vulnerable groups in developing countries, and how your innovation provides a solution.
GIF Grant Highlights

Grant Money
GIF offers grants, loans (including convertible debt), and equity investments ranging from GB £30,000 to £10 million. Applicants should propose the level and type of funding that is appropriate for their innovation, based on the stage of development.
Eligibility Criteria
- Anyone may apply, including teams from social enterprises, for-profit companies, non-profit organisations, government agencies, international organisations, and researchers in any country.
- The applicants can be coalition of organisations if this is helpful to bring in the skills needed to develop, test and scale your innovation. In such cases, the lead organization that will be responsible for managing funds from GIF should apply.
Application process
- All application materials should be submitted to GIF via the web application portal.
- All applicants have to submit an Initial Application. This includes a short online form and either a document (2-4 pages) or a slide deck (8-12 slides e.g. in Powerpoint).
- Applicants are also welcome to submit a video (maximum 8 minutes) as an optional addition to the application.
- The initial application should be considered as a summary business plan or project proposal, coupled with an explanation of how the innovation creates social impact. The initial application should include all the key aspects of a good business plan – the organisation’s mission, the team, the problem being addressed, the solution, the funding/business model, a growth strategy, the key risks and the planned uses of the funding requested, along with an approach for tracking results and social impact.
- Initial applications will be reviewed by GIF staff and the most promising applicants will be invited to move on to the next phase.
